Gophers Wrap Up Big Ten Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Amira Young's runner-up finish in the women's 100 meters highlighted the final day of competition for the University of Minnesota at the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships with the Gophers earning two conference titles and 34 podium finishes. Â
Minnesota's women finished the competition with 90 team points to place fifth while the men posted 51 points to place eighth.Â
Women's Day Three Highlights
Â
Amira Young led the Gopher women with two top-four finishes and secured 13 points in the team standings as she finished second in the 100-meter dash in 11.54 seconds and added a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash in 23.77 seconds.

Bethany Hasz also had a pair of scoring finishes on day three of the meet. She placed third in the 1,500-meter run in a career-best 4:20.12, good for seventh among all-time Gophers, before taking fifth in the 5,000-meter run in 15:59.69.

The Big Ten runner-up in the 10,000-meter run, Megan Hasz finished right behind her sister in the 5,000-meter run, placing sixth in 15:59.95. Patty O'Brien posted a career-best time of 16:27.96 to place 14th at the meet and move into 10th among all-time Gophers in the 5,000-meters as well.

In the day-three field events, Lorean Murray led the Maroon & Gold with a fourth-place finish in triple jump. She used a jump of 12.55 meters (41-02.25) on her first attempt of the day to take fourth after also scoring for the Maroon & Gold with an eighth-place finish in long jump on Saturday.

Other scoring finishes on the track on Sunday saw Rachel Schow, Val Larson, Paige Peschel, Erin Huls, and Sophia Anderson tally points for the Gophers.

Schow secured four points for the team with a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.72 seconds, her second-best time of the season. The Gophers picked up another three points in the team standings in the women's 400-meter dash as Larson finished sixth in 55.28 seconds running in lane eight.

Peschel and Huls each earned the best Big Ten finishes of their careers with seventh-place showings in their respective events. Peschel ran her second 800-meter PR in as many days, clocking a career-best time of 2:08.13 to finish seventh, while Huls also secured two points for the Gophers with a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.93 seconds.

The Gophers wrapped up the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay as the team of Sophia Anderson, Schow, Larson, and Huls ran a season-best 3:41.09.
Men's Day Three Highlights
Minnesota's men's throwers led the way on Sunday in the discus as Kaleb Siekmeier and Jonathan Tharaldsen combined for seven team points in the event. Siekmeier picked up his first Big Ten podium finish with a fifth-place finish at 54.04 meters (177-03 ft.) while Tharaldsen earned his second top-10 finish of the weekend with a sixth-place showing at 53.94 meters (177-00 ft.) after finishing second and earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors on Saturday in the shot put.Â
A pair of distance runners also recorded their second top-10 finishes of the weekend on Sunday. A night after successfully defending his Big Ten crown in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Obsa Ali added another three team points with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 meters while Alec Basten finished ninth in the 5,000 meters after finishing fourth in the steeple. Ali clocked a 14:37.59 in his final Big Ten race with Basten running 14:38.17.Â
Meanwhile, Sammie Houston cleared his best attempt of the season in the triple jump at 15.42 meters (50-07.25 ft.) to finish seventh while Mason Roomes set a new personal record at 14.64 meters (48-00.50 ft.) to finish 12th. Dawson LaRance ran 1:49.91 to place seventh in the men's 800 meter finals with Lucas Trapp adding a 10th-place finish at 1:51.64. Elliott Davis added one point with an eighth-place finish in the men's 400 meter final at 48.47.Â
Ali led the Maroon & Gold men with 13 points at the 2019 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships while Tharaldsen was close behind his teammate with 11 points.Â

The Maroon & Gold return to action later this month with the 2019 NCAA West Preliminary, May 23-25, in Sacramento, Calif. The field for the opening round of NCAA competition is expected to be announced on Thursday, May 16.Â
