Preview: Big Ten Championships
5/16/2019 10:57:00 AM | Rowing
BARABOO, Wis. – The Gopher Rowing team heads just across the border for this year's Big Ten Rowing Championships at Devil's Lake State Park hosted by Wisconsin.
Minnesota (R.V.) finished sixth last season, but the team's last conference championship came in Wisconsin when the Gophers dominated the field in Madison back in 2007.
GOPHERS IN THE POLLS
The Maroon & Gold remain among the teams just outside the CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Top 20 Poll this week. Minnesota ranked as high as No. 15 earlier this season but has not seen steady competition since the Big Ten Double Dual on April 13 in Iowa after weather up-ended the Gophers' last regatta in Clemson late last month.
CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD
The Big Ten boasts six teams currently in the Coaches Top 20: No. 5 Michigan, No. 6 Ohio State, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 12 Iowa, No. 14 Rutgers, and No. 15 Indiana, with Michigan State (R.V.) joining Minnesota just outside the top 20. The entire eight-team field is among the 23 highest-rated teams in the nation.
No. 6 Ohio State enters ass the six-time defending league champion, and the Buckeyes have nine titles to their name since the Big Ten started sponsoring rowing in 2000. OSU recorded a perfect 192 team points last season, sweeping the seven races.
