MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher track & field program heads to the 2019 Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this Friday through Sunday in Iowa City, Iowa.
About the B1G Championships
The University of Iowa is set to host the 2019 Big Ten Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Friday through Sunday at Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track. Tickets for the B1G Championships are on sale through the University of Iowa Ticket Office; gates open one hour prior to the start of the first event. FloTrack is streaming all three days of competition, and Big Ten Network will provide delayed coverage of the event on at 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday, May 15.
2018 Women's B1G Outdoor Championship Rewind
Minnesota won the women's third outdoor and seventh overall Big Ten Conference title at the 2018 B1G Outdoor Championship. The Gophers scored points in 15 of 21 possible events. Nicolle Murphy (javelin) and Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw) led the Maroon & Gold as B1G individual champions while Kiley Sabin (shot put), Ashley Ramacher (high jump), Madeline Strandemo (3,000-meter steeplechase), Shanique Wright (triple jump), and the 4x100-meter relay team of Rachel Schow, Titania Markland, Emma Spagnola, and Emerald Egwim all finished as runners-up.

The Gophers finished seventh at the 2018 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 60 points behind Obsa Ali's victory in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Ali also finished third in the 5,000 meters while Teddy Frid added a third-place showing in the decathlon and Jonathan Webb finished third in the 400 meters (Webb scored in four different events in the final day of competition).
Last Time Out: Meet of the UnSaintly
The Gophers won eight events and unattached Gophers collected another three titles at the Meet of the UnSaintly hosted by Hamline University last weekend. The competition marked the final tune-up meet for the Maroon & Gold before the championship portion of the season. Carissa Dock (3,000-meter steeplechase), Karlie Place (pole vault), Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw), Mike Herauf (pole vault), James Travis (triple jump), Ben Gucinski (high jump), Kaleb Siekmeier (discus), and Seth Eliason (800-meter run) all won titles.
Outdoor Records Fall
The Gopher women broke two outdoor program records at the Stanford Invitational. Bethany Hasz improved on her own program record in the 5,000m with a time of 15:45.72 while Megan Hasz ran 33:09.57 in the 10,000m, improving on the previous Minnesota record time of 33:24.93 held by Laura Docherty since 2013. Obsa Ali broke the school's men's 3,000 meter steeplechase record for the third time earlier this year at the Payton Jordan Invitational.
Indoor Records Fall
The Gopher women broke three indoor program records this season: shot put (Kiley Sabin), 3,000m run (Bethany Hasz), and 5,000m run (Megan Hasz). In total, the women has 16 additions to the program's all-time top-10 indoor list in 14 different events. On the men's side, seven 'U' competitors posted all-time top 10 performances in eight events.
2019 NCAA Indoor Championships Rewind
Four Gophers represented the Maroon & Gold at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, and all four earned Second Team All-America accolades. Kieran McKeag (12th in men's weight throw), Kiley Sabin (14th in women's shot put), Jonathan Tharaldsen (14th in men's shot put), and Obsa Ali (15th in men's 5,000 meters) represented Minnesota at the national meet.

The Gopher women's program finished seventh with 60 points while the men came in ninth with 36 points at the 2019 Big Ten Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship. Val Larson and Tess Keyzers were honored as Second Team All-Big Ten selections with runner-up finishes in the women's 600 meters and the women's weight throw, respectively. Meanwhile, Obsa Ali and Jonathan Tharaldsen led the way for the men with third-place finishes in the men's 5,000 meters and the men's shot put, respectively.
Gophers Honor Senior Class
Minnesota honored its seniors during the Snowshoe Open and Parents Day Invite. The Gophers celebrated the achievements of graduating seniors Jenna Conzemius, Abby Kargol, Abby Lange, Patty O'Brien, Paige Peschel, Ally Smith, Sophia Anderson, Karlie Place, Wilsonique Delson, Kaitlyn Long, Temi Ogunrinde, Kiley Sabin, Obsa Ali, Matt Rosen, James Travis, and Eric Walker.
Gophers Name Captains
Matthew Rosen, Teddy Frid, Jackson Wellenstein, Jonathan Tharaldsen, Evan Ferlic, Temi Ogunrinde, Kiley Sabin, Rachel Schow, and Patty O'Brien are leading the Gophers as captains this season. Ogunrinde returns to the team's leadership corps after serving as a captain last season while O'Brien and Ferlic continue their captaincy after leading the Gopher cross country squad this fall.
2019 Outdoor Schedule Highlights
Highlighting the outdoor slate were two meets at the new University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium, which provides the Gophers the opportunity to compete outdoors on campus for the first time in over 15 years. The Gophers hosted the Minnesota Women's Twilight Meet (April 24) and the Minnesota Men's Twilight Meet (May 1). In total, the outdoor season includes 10 weeks of competition, and the Gophers compete in Florida, California, Minnesota, Arizona, North Carolina, Iowa, Louisiana, Iowa, and Texas.
Gophers Celebrate Track & Field Stadium Grand Opening
The University of Minnesota and Gopher Athletics celebrated a new era of track & field with the grand opening of the University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium on Monday, Sept. 17. Located in the heart of the new Athletes Village area, this facility will become synonymous with track & field excellence in the Midwest. It will not only provide a first-class experience for the Gophers, but it will also provide a wonderful venue for the state's largest amateur meets and a Minnesota option for USA Track & Field to place its marquee events in the Upper Midwest.
The University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium gives Minnesota its first opportunity in more than 15 years to host home outdoor meets, including Big Ten and NCAA competition. The facility features a nine-lane track with the Beynon 2000 surface, full-field event hosting capabilities, versatile configuration, fully enclosed, heated warm-up and cool down areas, and grandstands with the capacity to host major competitions.
