TOGETHER AGAIN
This weekend's Big Ten tri-dual marks Minnesota's first competition since the swimmers returned home from a lengthy training trip in Hawaii. The Gophers operated under island time from Dec. 31 to Jan. 15, at which time the team trekked to Los Angeles for a Jan. 17 dual meet with USC.

With Gopher divers also on the move during that time, this weekend will mark the first time Minnesota swimmers and divers have competed together since the Minnesota Invite (Dec. 4-7).

LAST TIME OUT
In Minnesota's last outing, the Gophers topped RV/No. 24 USC (then No. 20/9) on both sides of the pool for an impressive upset sweep. Senior Matthew Thomas (100 butterfly, 200 fly), junior Cameron Kelley (500 freestyle, 1000 free) and sophomore Max McHugh (100 breaststroke, 200 breast) led the men's side of the sweep, with each earning two individual spots atop the podium in the 149-113 victory.

On the women's front, three separate first place finishes from senior Tevyn Waddell (100 backstroke, 200 back, 200 individual medley) helped the Gophers notch their second straight victory, 136-126. Sophomore Abbey Kilgallon (500 free, 1000 free) and senior Lindsey Kozelsky (100 breast, 200 breast) also tallied two first place finishes in the effort.

FIRST PLACE FINISHES
In addition to the aforementioned swimmers, two additional Gophers notched a single first place finish against USC. Junior Tim Sates won the 100 free, while freshman Gavin Olson added to his strong rookie campaign with a victory in the 200 back.

TAKING A DIVE
With the swimmers traveling to Hawaii and Los Angeles, Gopher divers competed at the Tennessee Diving Invitational (Jan. 3-5) and Bruin Diving Invitational (Jan. 17-18).

In Tennessee, sophomore Joy Zhu collected wins in both the 1-meter (313.55) and 3-meter springboard (365.85) for her third springboard sweep of the season. Freshman Jake Butler also delivered a podium finish, placing second in the men's 1-meter (314.80).

At the Bruin Diving Invite, Zhu shined yet again, collecting second place in the 1-meter (591.60) and third in the 3-meter (628.60) en route to her third Big Ten Diver of the Week selection (Jan. 22)

IN THE RANKINGS
The Gophers head into this weekend's Big Ten tri dual currently ranked No. 23 in the CSCAA TYR Top-25 on the women's side after back-to-back wins. Although the Minnesota men are also coming off two consecutive victories, they will look to rejoin the top-25 rankings via a strong performance in West Lafayette.

As for the competition, Northwestern is the most decorated with No. 21 status on the men's side and a No. 16 ranking for their women. Purdue comes in with both their men and women unranked by CSCAA.

A LOOK AT PURDUE
Purdue's 2019-20 campaign has featured similar results for their women and men, as both sit with 1-3 records in dual meet action. However, both sides have notched top-three finishes in all three invitationals the Boilermakers have participated in.

The Purdue men's lone victory came over Michigan State earlier this month, while all three losses came versus ranked opponents in No. 4 Indiana, No. 12 Tennessee and No. 16 Notre Dame.

The women's side tells almost the exact same tale, as their sole victory came over Michigan State and all three losses came at the hands of ranked opponents: No. 4 Tennessee, No. 12 Notre Dame and most recently, No. 21 Indiana.

THE TAKE ON NORTHWESTERN
Northwestern has found much more success in dual meets this season. The men started off hot with three straight wins over UIC, Oakland and MSU, before dropping four straight ranked meets to No. 10 Arizona, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 10 Louisville and No. 16 Notre Dame. A pair of home victories over No. 18 Iowa and Cincinnati brought them back over .500, until this last Saturday when the Wildcats lost an away dual to Wisconsin, 161-139. After Saturday's loss, they sit at 5-5 on the season.

The women have had a more impressive season, coming into Friday with a 10-2 record. They opened the year with seven straight tallies in the win column before eventually taking their first defeat, 149-151, at the hands of No. 19 Louisville earlier this month. Another loss followed in an away dual with No. 12 Notre Dame, before the Wildcats took three straight over Iowa, Cincinnati and RV Wisconsin.

SERIES HISTORY
The Minnesota men and women boast strong records over both the Wildcats and Boilermakers. Since 2010, the men are 5-0 versus Northwestern and 8-1 against Purdue, while the women are 5-0 and 9-0 against the two programs, respectively.

Minnesota most recently faced off against these two programs last season. The Gopher men swept the tri-dual meet in 2018-19, topping the Wildcats by a score of 226-127 and dismantling the Boilermakers, 203.5-149.5.

On the women's side, the Gophers secured an equally impressive sweep via a 202-151 victory over Northwestern and a 188-164 win over Purdue.

HEARING FROM JUNIOR CAMERON KELLEY
On the upcoming tri-dual against Purdue and Northwestern…
"With the season coming down to the wire, we're really looking to lock in on the things that get us ready to perform. Anything from the way we strategize our races to how we prepare for multi-day meets. It's also one last chance to take stock of what we can do before we zero in on conference."

HEARING FROM JUNIOR BRITTANY HORN
On the upcoming tri-dual against Purdue and Northwestern…
"As we are finishing up our last meet with two Big Ten competitors, Northwestern and Purdue, both the women and men are ready to end the season on a high note. We are eager to start taper and to reach the goals we have set as a team."

NCAA CUTS
Over two months remain in the season, but 13 Gophers have already combined to swim 20 different NCAA cuts so far in 2019-20. McHugh headlines the list, having achieved a pair of 'A' cuts in the 100 breast (50.74) and 200 breast (1:51.62).

Kozelsky is also making noise in regard to the nation's fastest times of the season. The senior's 58.66 mark in the 100 breast ranks third in the country, while her top time in the 200 breast (2:09.46) is good for 17th.

B1G ACCOLADES
Already in the 2019-20 campaign, Minnesota has collected an incredible 12 Big Ten Conference weekly awards. The Gophers earned five Big Ten Swimmer of the Week nods in McHugh (Oct. 30, Nov. 13, Dec. 11), Kozelsky (Nov. 13) and Waddell (Oct. 30). Additionally, Olson has twice been named Freshman of the Week (Oct. 30, Nov. 13).

In addition to these swimming honors, Minnesota has seen two divers combine for four Diver of the Week awards: Zhu (Dec. 11, Jan. 8, Jan. 22) and Butler (Oct. 16). Butler was also dubbed Freshman of the Week on Jan. 8.

With 12 accolades this early in the season, the Gophers have already out-performed their recognition from both 2016-17 and 2017-18 and look capable of besting last year's total of 15 weekly awards.
