Maroon & Gold Sweep Singles to Win Home Opener

1/31/2020 9:10:00 PM | Men's Tennis

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota men's tennis team came away with a 6-1 win over the Auburn Tigers in the team's home opener on Friday.

After the Gophers dropped the match's doubles point, they were able to sweep through Auburn's line of singles, finishing a perfect 6-0 in singles play on the evening.

The Maroon & Gold will now have Saturday to recuperate before facing off against the Alabama Crimson Tide at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday at Baseline Tennis Center.

Doubles Competition

The Gophers round of doubles matches came down to the wire on Friday, with two matches entering a ten point tiebreak. Doubles started with senior Eli Ogilvy and junior Jackson Allen dropping their doubles match, followed by the pairings of Vlad Lobak/Siim Troost and Stefan Milicevic/Bodin Zarkovic entering a 6-6 set tiebreaker. Unfortunately for the Maroon & Gold, Auburn would prevail in the No. 3 doubles spot, winning their tiebreaker against Milicevic and Zarkovic 10-8 to seal the doubles point for the Tigers. Lobak and Troost's match went unfinished.

Singles Competition

After a tight round of doubles, Minnesota came out hot to start singles play with five out of six Gophers winning their first set. The Maroon & Gold didn't stop there, as Stefan Milicevic, Vlad Lobak, Jackson Allen, Eli Ogilvy, and Bodin Zarkovic each went on to win their singles matches, sweeping the Tigers. Milicevic, Lobak, Allen, and Zarkovic each were able to take their matches in two sets, while Ogilvy and Troost both finished theirs in the third.

Notable

With their win over Auburn on Friday, the Gophers have now won nine out of their last ten home openers at the Baseline Tennis Center. Minnesota's lone home opening loss of the decade came against NC State in 2018.

Quotable

"Today's doubles started pretty slow for us, usually we like to come out quicker in doubles," Gophers senior Eli Ogilvy said. "Last week we actually won the doubles point against Harvard but went on to lose the match, so we knew that we could get this one back by staying together as a team and staying resilient."

Up Next

Following a day off the Gophers will continue their weekend homestand by playing the 6-1 Alabama Crimson Tide at Baseline Tennis Center. The match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
