Gophers Slated for Valentine's Day Doubleheader

2/12/2020 2:12:00 PM | Tennis

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team will be back at Baseline Tennis Center this Friday for a Valentine's Day doubleheader. The Gophers will face off against the Drake University Bulldogs at 2:00p.m. and the South Dakota Coyotes at 6:30p.m., on Friday Feb. 14. Currently undefeated at Baseline, the Maroon and Gold will look to continue their perfect record at home.

"We are excited to have another weekend at home as we host both Drake and South Dakota," said head coach Catrina Thompson. "The team is looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd for a doubleheader on Friday."

ABOUT THE GOPHERS
Coming off of another home sweep over Iowa and Marquette, the Gophers only gave up one point which came against their Big Ten rival. Freshman Ekin Ercetin made her mark on the weekend. Playing in the No. 3 singles position, Ercetin has a 6-1 record on the season, picking off wins from Montana, Utah, Gonzaga, North Dakota, Northern Iowa and Marquette. She also leads doubles with partner Dalila Said, the duo is 4-1 and is projected to play in the No. 2 spot this weekend.

"Everyone on the team is excited to play at Baseline again in a few days," said Ekin Ercetin. "We love playing at home, and it's a really good feeling to go into the weekend undefeated."

HOME COURT DOMINANCE
Currently 6-2 on the regular season with four straight wins at Baseline, Minnesota looks to continue success on their home courts. They have won 15 of their last 16 home matches and for the first time since 2015, the Gophers are on a five game win streak. That year, the team got six wins in a row midway through the season, which ended against a No. 13 ranked Michigan team.

ABOUT THE BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs and Gophers have a history that dates back to the 1995-96 season. In their 15 meetings, Minnesota leads the series undefeated at 15-0. The doubles pairing of Liza Petushkova and Joely Lomas are front runners for the Bulldogs, they have built a record of 5-2 in the No. 1 spot. Most notably, they have competed fiercely with duos from Denver, No. 19 Kansas and downed the top tandem from Wisconsin.

ABOUT THE COYOTES
South Dakota has yet to earn a win against the Maroon and Gold. In their last four meetings (2019, 2018, 2017 and 2016) they have accumulated only two points against Minnesota. Tied for third in the Summit League with Denver, the Coyotes are led by junior Jana Lazarevic. With four wins in the last five matches, she has defeated opponents from Drake, Seattle, Murray and Missouri State.
