2/7/2020 9:20:00 PM | Men's Tennis
HANOVER, N.H. - The Gopher men's tennis team fell 4-3 in their match Friday evening against Dartmouth College.
With their loss to the Big Green, the Maroon & Gold move to a record of 4-2 on the spring season heading into their match on Sunday at Yale University.
After dropping the doubles point, Friday's match featured singles victories by Siim Troost, Eli Ogilvy, and Sebastian Vile for the Gophers, but the Maroon & Gold ended up falling just short in their comeback attempt.
Doubles Competition
The Gophers found themselves in a trifecta of tight doubles matches to start the night off, with the pairings of Siim Troost/Vlad Lobak and Jackson Allen/Eli Ogilvy both taking on ranked competition. Ultimately it was Dartmouth that would take the match's doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. Troost and Lobak's ranked match went unfinished.
Singles Competition
Coming off of their comeback win against the Crimson Tide a week prior, the Maroon & Gold knew this match wasn't over yet. A pair of quick singles wins by Eli Ogilvy and Sebastian Vile helped tie the match up at 2-2, leaving the top three singles matches left to determine the match's winner. The No. 2 and No.3 singles spots would also be split, with Vlad Lobak falling 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 and with Siim Troost winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
With the match now tied 3-3, it all came down to Stefan Milicevic in the No. 1 position. Against Charlie Broom, the No. 97 ranked singles player in the nation, Milicevic fought his way to a 6-6 tiebreak in the third set to decide it all. Despite astounding effort from Milicevic, Broom went on to take the match's tiebreak and propel Dartmouth to victory, winning by a score of 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(7).
Notable
With his singles victory in the No. 6 spot for the Gophers, Sebastian Vile has recorded his first singles win of the 2020 spring season.
Quotable
"I am proud of the way we fought back after being down," head coach Geoff Young said. "We gave ourselves a chance to win after losing four first sets. It's always tough to swallow these when they're so close, but we will be better from this match. Dartmouth has a good team and they're a class act."
Up Next
Minnesota will have tomorrow off to rest, recover, and travel to New Haven, Conn. for their match at 11:00 a.m. CST against the Bulldogs of Yale University.
