Gophers Win Eight Titles

Minnesota closed out the two-day Meyo Invitational with eight event titles.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Mason Roomes notched the best men's long jump performance in the Big Ten this season as the University of Minnesota track & field program closed out the Meyo Invitational on Saturday with a total of eight event titles.
Women's Highlights
The Gopher women wrapped up the two-day Meyo Invitational with five event titles and eight all-time top-10 marks. Amira Young led the women with two event titles while Abby Kohut-Jackson and Janielle Josephs were also victorious on the track and Nayoka Clunis took home top honors in weight throw.
Kohut-Jackson won the championship 3,000 meters in a career-best 9:20.38 to move into sixth in Minnesota history. Likewise, Josephs also climbed to sixth among all-time Gophers with her winning time of 54.66 seconds in the unseeded section of the 400 meters.
The Maroon & Gold went one-two in the women's 60 meters led by Young, who picked up her second title of the meet after winning the 200 meters on day one of the meet. Young posted a career-best time of 7.36 seconds -- good for the win and second among all-time Gophers. Octavia Cato recorded a career-best time of 7.47 seconds to finish as runner-up and tie for sixth in Minnesota history in the 60 meters as well.
Other top performances by the Gopher women saw Bethany Hasz make her season debut in the mile with a runner-up showing at the meet, clocking a career-best time of 4:38.86 to climb into second in Minnesota program history. In the field events, Devia Brown led the Gophers with a season-best performance in shot put. Her throw of 16.87 meters (55-04.25 ft.) was good for fourth at the meet and third in Minnesota history.
Day one of the meet saw Clunis win women's weight throw and move into second in Minnesota history with a career-best mark of 22.02 meters (72-03.00 ft.) along with Young's title in the 200 meters where she clocked a winning time of 23.72 seconds.
Men's Highlights
Mason Roomes continues his impressive redshirt junior season with his second win in the men's long jump as he led the field on Saturday at the Meyo Invitational and now ranks first in the Big Ten in the long jump. Moreover, Roomes cleared another personal record and continues to chase Keita Cline's school record with a leap of 7.71 meters (25-03.50 ft.). Cline's Minnesota record of 7.97 meters (26-01.75 ft.) in 1995 is the only performance in Gophers history ahead of Roomes.
Jackson Wellenstein led the way for the Gophers on the track on Saturday with a win in the men's 400 meters. The redshirt senior clocked Minnesota's fastest time of the season with a winning performance of 47.59. Wellenstein also contributed to a runner-up finish for the Maroon & Gold in the men's 4x400 meter relay as he, Jonathan Webb, Elliott Davis and Ben Psicihulis posted the Gophers' fastest time in that event at 3:07.89 to take runner-up honors.
In the field events, Kevin Nedrick continues to climb the Minnesota record book in the men's shot put with his personal record of 19.05 meters (62-06.00 ft.). The Gophers newcomer now ranks sixth in program history after Saturday's performance with Nedrick finishing fourth at the Meyo Invitational.
Owen Hoeft also jumped to sixth in the program record books on Saturday with a third-place finish in the Ryan Shay 3K at the Meyo Invitational. After celebrating his birthday on Friday, Hoeft ran 8:03.77 for the Maroon & Gold on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Gophers added four personal records in the men's mile as Alec Basten finished second at 4:05.45, Nick Rink took fourth at 4:06.37, Jordan MacIntosh came in eighth at 4:07.10 and Jack Manderscheid clocked a 4:08.19 to place 15th. Shane Streich added a seventh-place finish in the Meyo Mile with a time of 4:06.23 while Lucas Trapp finished with a seventh-place finish in the men's 800 meters.
Mike Herauf opened the meet on Friday with a win in the men's pole vault at 5.15 meters (16-10.75 ft.).
