Maroon & Gold Prepare for Ranked Matchup Against Tulane

3/10/2020 1:27:00 PM | Men's Tennis

The University of Minnesota men's tennis team will travel to New Orleans, La. for their final non conference match of the season on Friday, as they take on the Tulane Green Wave at 1:00 p.m. CST on March 13. This will mark the team's first outdoors match of the season, weather permitting.

Coming off of an undefeated weekend that included their first Big Ten victory of the season, the Gophers have moved up three spots in the most recent ITA rankings, and they now sit as the No. 37 team in the nation. Holding a record of 8-3, the Maroon & Gold carry plenty of momentum into their lone match of the week on Friday.

Gophers head coach Geoff Young also was able to capture his 200th career head coaching win with the team in Sunday's 5-2 victory over Wisconsin, making him just the third head coach for Gopher men's tennis to hit the 200 win mark. The impressive weekend for Minnesota was charged by undefeated singles and doubles performances by Vlad Lobak, Eli Ogilvy, and Jackson Allen.

The Tulane Green Wave enter their match with the Gophers with a 5-6 record and No. 47 team ranking according to the ITA. Tulane's difficult spring schedule makes them an interesting opponent for the Maroon & Gold, as three of the team's six losses have come against ranked squads (No. 11 Stanford, No. 3 Texas, and No. 8 TCU). With key victories against opponents like No. 20 Mississippi State, LSU, and SMU, the Green Wave will prove to be a difficult adversary for Minnesota come Friday.

The Green Wave are also prepared to have a pair of ranked singles players waiting in the wings for Friday's matchup with the Maroon & Gold. Hamish Stewart, the No. 50 ranked singles player in the nation according to the ITA, as well as 72nd-ranked Ewan Moore are likely set to matchup against Gopher standouts Stefan Milicevic (ranked No. 54 according to the ITA) and Vlad Lobak barring any lineup changes by either team.

"Tulane is one of the stronger teams on our schedule this year," head coach Geoff Young said. "This week is great for us to play outdoors to get ready for the Big Ten season. We're really looking forward to this match!"
