3/6/2020 9:55:00 PM | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE, Wash. - The Gopher men's tennis team took down the Washington Huskies on the road Friday night by a score of 6-1.
Doubles victories by the No. 2 and No. 3 pairings of Stefan Milicevic/Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy/Sebastian Vile paved the way for the Maroon & Gold to sweep doubles play to start the match off.
Minnesota followed doubles play with five out of six Gophers winning their singles matches on the evening, including Siim Troost, Vlad Lobak, Allen, Ogiilvy, and Vile.
The Gophers will now have a day to return home to Baseline Tennis Center before they kickoff Big Ten conference play against longtime rival Wisconsin at 12:00 CST on Sunday.
Doubles Competition
To start the match off for the Maroon & Gold, the doubles pairings of Stefan Milicevic/Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy/Sebastian Vile showed up to play on Friday, earning two tight doubles wins that earned Minnesota a hard fought doubles point. Milicevic/Allen's match ended with a score of 6-4, while Ogilvy/Vile ended their match with a 6-3 win. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Siim Troost and Vlad Lobak went unfinished.
Singles Competition
Following their hot start in doubles play, the Gophers continued their solid play into singles. To start singles play off, both Siim Troost and Jackson Allen captured wins in their No. 3 and No. 5 matches to push the lead up to 3-0 for the Gophers. Eli Ogilvy then earned himself a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the No. 4 singles spot to seal the match win for Minnesota.
Vlad Lobak and Sebastian Vile then followed this up with two-set victories of their own, putting the score at 6-0. In the No. 1 singles match, Stefan Milicevic ultimately fell to Jack Davis in a tightly contested battle 6-4, 7-6.
Notable
With his win tonight in Seattle, Geoff Young now sits at 199 career victories as the University of Minnesota's head coach. If Young hits 200 career wins, he'd be just the third Gophers men's tennis coach to reach the mark all-time (David Geatz - 318, Jerry Noyce - 260).
Quotable
"We played well tonight," head coach Geoff Young said. "Washington is always tough, especially in Seattle. We'll enjoy this tonight and get ready for the Badgers on Sunday in Minneapolis."
Up Next
The Gophers will return home for their Big Ten opener on Sunday as they take on Wisconsin in a Border Battle matchup. The match is set to take place at 12:00 p.m. CST at Baseline Tennis Center.
