2/22/2021 10:00:00 AM | Women's Swimming & Diving
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
In order to help maintain social distancing, the swimming and diving portions of the Big Ten Championships are being held separately this season. The swimmers will be staying home to host the swimming portion at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, while both the female and male divers will head to West Lafayette, Ind. where Purdue will be hosting the diving portions of both the men's and women's Big Ten Championships.
"On behalf of our entire team, I would like to express our gratitude to all of the people who have worked so hard to give us the opportunity to compete in the Big Ten Championships this week and next," said head coach Kelly Kremer. "It takes an incredible effort on the part of so many to make this happen. We look forward to taking full advantage of these opportunities in the next couple weeks."

HOME FINALE
The 2021 Big Ten Championships will be the last for three Gopher women, two of whom will be competing on their home turf. Senior Captains Abbey Erwin and Brittany Horn will be competing for their final time at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center as they aim to extend their final collegiate seasons with bids to the 2021 NCAA Championships.
Redshirt-senior Sarah Bacon will be taking on her final Big Ten Championship as well, though she will do so from West Lafayette with the rest of the Minnesota divers.
LAST TIME OUT
Minnesota walked away with a pair of victories during their last time out, topping Big Ten rivals Iowa and Nebraska in a home tri-dual on Feb. 6. The Gophers topped the Hawkeyes and Huskers with nearly identical scores, winning to the tune of 192-107 and 193-107, respectively.
RECORDS ON RECORDS
During Minnesota's Feb. 6 tri-dual, Bacon made her final home performance count, setting a new pool record with her performance on the one-meter springboard event. Her six-dive score of 352.30 beat out former Gopher and Big Ten Champion Maggie Keefer, who had previously held the record since 2013.
This latest record will only add to Bacon's already incredible resume, as the Indianapolis, Ind. native currently holds the Minnesota team 3-meter record (430.60), Big Ten Championship 3-meter record (430.60), NCAA Championship 1-meter record (363.20) and a plethora of pool records around the nation.
BEST FOR LAST
An exceptional 12 lifetime bests were achieved by the Minnesota women during the Feb. 6 dual-meet season finale. Among the most impressive was freshman Megan Van Berkom's time in the 200 butterfly, where the Chatham, Ill. native dropped more than four full seconds off her previous best to win the event. Van Berkom didn't stop with the eye-turning efforts there, however, as she recorded her second career collegiate win in the 400 IM just minutes later with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 4:14.62, which currently stands as the second fastest in the Big Ten this season.
Sophomore Rachel Butler was another student-athlete among those to record lifetime bests, coming in 0.09 seconds behind Van Berkom in the 400 IM, a time which stands as the third fastest in the Big Ten coming into the Championships. Other names on the list include Emma Linscott (100 fly - 54.76), Grace Wollschlager (500 free - 5:02.38) and freshmen Molly Urkiel (200 breast - 2:17.72) and Maeve O'Driscoll (50 free - 23.46).
PODIUM TOPPERS
With 18 event wins in their two tri-duals this season, Minnesota has plenty of experience atop the podium so far this season, as 10 different Gophers have visited the peak at least once. Sophomore Emma Lezer has led the charge for the Maroon and Gold thus far with six total podium topping performances, while freshman Indy Jongman and Bacon are close behind with five and four, respectively. Though slightly behind Lezer's total count, Bacon's four event wins reflect a perfect season for the senior so far, having swept every diving event she's taken part of.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Gopher women will enter Tuesday's Championships ranked No. 22 in the CSCAA TYR Top-25 poll. It should be noted that the CSCAA rankings are built to indicate what to expect from teams in head-to-head dual meet match-ups and are not built to reflect performances during championship season.
Six other Big Ten teams can find their name in the poll as well, including No. 7 Northwestern, No. 9 Michigan, No. 17 Wisconsin, No. 21 Indiana, No. 23 Ohio State and RV Penn State, all of whom will provide the top challenges for Minnesota in the upcoming meet.
BIG TEN HISTORY
Minnesota has brought home the title of Big Ten Champion four times over the past nine years, the most recent of which came in 2015. On top of those numbers, Minnesota has only finished outside the top-four once since the 2005-06 season, adding another Championship title at the 2008 Big Ten Championships.
Individually, the Gophers have fared just as well in recent history, claiming 69 event titles since the 05-06 season. The most recent Gopher woman to claim an individual title was Bacon, when she set both the Minnesota team record and Big Ten Championship record in the three-meter springboard event with a six-dive score of 430.60 in 2019.
HEARING FROM ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH JESSE MOORE
On his expectations heading into this year's Big Ten Championships and some Gophers to watch...
"Our women have shown resilience, grit, compassion and have learned so much training and competing through this season. I expect to see some pretty amazing performances this week from veterans like Emily Cook and Rachel Butler. I'm so proud of Emma Linscott's growth and look forward to seeing her continue to be tenacious through another meet. I'm equally excited to see some of our first year student-athletes like Megan Van Berkom and Indy Jongman make a name for themselves in this conference as well. It's going to be an exciting week of competition and I'm beyond proud of our always Golden Gophers."
HEARING FROM REDSHIRT SENIOR SARAH BACON
On her expectations for the divers at this year's Big Ten Championships…
"The environment at Big Tens is unlike any other meet. It's typically my favorite every year just because of the atmosphere, having teammates around the pool, everyone being engaged and people going absolutely nuts for good swims and dives. I think the divers have a really good chance of stepping up and performing well in the Big Ten this year. Jake Butler is coming off a strong performance at the meet against Iowa, and is hungry and eager than ever to perform at Big Tens. Max Royzen has been looking to score points in multiple events for the team. Duncan Lester and Ryan Phillip have also been looking sharp in practice, and are ready to compete. We have a couple freshmen in Megan Phillip and Susanna Fish who will also be looking to score some points on all three events as well. I'm really excited to see what this group can do."
On her career at Minnesota going into her final Big Ten Championships…
"Saying this is my last Big Tens is a bittersweet feeling. I guess I had never realized how accomplished my career has been here at Minnesota until right now. The 2019 Big Ten Championships was a great meet for me, and I'm looking to take it up even another notch at this Big Ten Championships, hopefully coming away with some personal bests on both boards. I am feeling better than ever diving-wise, and am ready to see what I can do this weekend."
HEARING FROM SOPHOMORE EMMA LEZER
On her expectations for Minnesota at the upcoming Big Ten Championships…
"I'm super excited for the team this week. I think we have a lot of swimmers who have some unlocked potential that we have yet to see. Specifically, the freshmen are a strong addition this year, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they and the rest of the team performs. Above all, I'm just excited to compete with the team again and have some fun."
On who she's excited to watch compete...
"It's impossible to pick just one person. I'd have to say I'm really excited for Olivia Bloomer. I've been training with her all year and she's one of the hardest workers I know. She's a good taper swimmer and I'm looking forward to seeing her succeed. Emily Cook and Megan Van Berkom are a couple others to look out for as well. They're both super nice girls and have big things coming for them."
