Gophers Remain in Sixth Place After Day Four of B1G Championships

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota swimming & diving program closed out day four of the 2021 Big Ten Swimming Championships with 427 total points, keeping the Gophers in sixth place heading into the final day of competition.
 
Six Gophers earned spots in the evening finals session due to their standout performances in preliminaries. Leading the way was Emily Cook, who swam her way to an appearance in the A final in the 100 backstroke with a prelim time of 53.52. Cook ultimately placed seventh overall in the event with a finals time of 53.14.
 
Freshmen Indy Jongman and Paula Rodriguez Rivero both utilized new personal best times to secure finals spots in the 100 back, with Jongman using a 54.28 time to advance to the B final and Rodriguez Rivero touching in 54.83 to clinch a position in the C final. In the evening session, Jongman came away with a 14th place finish (54.26) by improving upon her personal best time from the morning, while Rodriguez Rivero placed 22nd (55.10.)
 
In the 100 breaststroke, Emma Lezer made the B final with a prelim time of 1:00.97, while Holley Dennis qualified for the C final with a personal best time of 1:02.21. Molly Urkiel swam a personal best time in prelims as well, touching in 1:02.62.
 
Lezer stormed through the B final to secure the heat win for the Maroon and Gold and better her previously set NCAA 'B' cut, touching the wall in a time of 1:00.51 for a ninth place finish overall in the event.
 
Megan Van Berkom was the lone Gopher to qualify for finals in the 200 butterfly, using a 1:59.83 time to earn a spot in the B finals. From there, the freshman registered an NCAA B cut and new personal best time in the evening session, touching in 1:58.13 and finishing 10th overall.

Closing out the evening, the team of Maggie Summit, Pyper Doo, Olivia Bloomer and Indy Jongman finished sixth in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:29.91. For Summit, the event went particularly well, as the Gopher sophomore led off with a 50 free split of 22.62, improving on her previous NCAA B cut and signifying a new lifetime best.
 
In the diving well, Megan Phillip qualified for the consolation final by finishing tenth in prelims with a five-dive score of 239.40. Phillip ultimately placed 12th overall after finishing fourth in the consolation final with a score of 231.30.

The 2021 Big Ten Championships will resume for the fifth and final day of competition on Friday morning. Preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. CT with the day's scheduled events including the 100 free, 200 back, 200 breast, 1,650 free and 400 free relay. Finals will begin at 6:30 p.m. CT. Prelims for the men's one-meter springboard will begin at 11:20 a.m.
