Gopher Freshmen Star in 5-2 Win over Indiana

Minnesota wins doubles and singles for the second time this year.

Bloomington, IN. - The Gophers secured their first road victory of the season. The team got back in the win column for the third time in four games. Minnesota (3-6) took care of business in both doubles and singles play against Indiana (1-8).

Doubles Play

The Gophers battled back to clinch the doubles point 2-0. New pairing of Ekin Ercetin and Juliet Zhang saw success as the pair won their match 6-2. Rachel Hanford and Dalila Said went down 3-5 in their match, but battled back and won 7-5 to clinch the doubles point for the visitors. 

Singles Play

The Gophers were led in singles play by freshmen Rachel Hanford and Zeyneb Sarioglan. Both freshmen have been performing well in singles lately with Hanford going 3-1 in her last four matches and Sarioglan going unbeaten in her last four. Hanford and Sarioglan won in straight sets to put the Gophers up 2-1 after an Indiana victory.

The 'U' needed one more victory to clinch the match and senior captain Juliet Zhang was there to answer the call. She took care of senior Caitlin Bernard in straight sets to win the match for the Maroon & Gold. Ekin Ercetin came from behind to pick up her third singles victory in the last four matches and make the final score 5-2.

"Hard fought road win today. Proud of the way we competed and getting an all-around effort from start to finish," said head coach Catrina Thompson. "Winning the doubles point gave us some good momentum going into singles and credit to each of the girls for battling and to Rachel, Juliet, Zeyneb and Erin for getting us singles wins."

-Freshman Zeyneb Sarioglan has won four straight singles matches. 

-Rachel Hanford picks up her team leading seventh conference singles win.

-Juliet Zhang picked up her 50th collegiate career singles victory.

Minnesota is back in action Friday Mar. 19 on the road against Nebraska. The match is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
