Distance Squad Makes Outdoor Debut

Bethany Hasz led the Gophers with a win in the women's 5,000 meters on Friday night.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Maroon & Gold distance runners took center stage as members of the Golden Gopher track & field team competed at the Big Ten Indiana Invite #2 at the Hoosiers' Billy Hayes Track & Field Complex on Friday night. The competition marked the first outdoor races of the season for most of Minnesota's distance corps, and the Gophers closed out the meet with five top-three finishes.
Bethany Hasz led the team with the lone event title of the evening, clocking an outdoor career-best time of 15:43.58 to improve on her own Minnesota program record and win the women's 5,000 meters in her outdoor debut. She cruised to the victory with a 43-second win ahead of runner-up Addie Engel of Ohio State (16:26.38). Megan Hasz finished fourth in 16:32.84 as well. On the men's side, Khalid Hussein finished third in the 5,000 meters, recording an outdoor PR of 14:39.41.
Abby Kohut-Jackson led the Gophers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a third-place finish in 10:17.53, just shy of her career best (10:15.14). Three Gophers secured top-10 finishes with career-best times as Carissa Dock came in fifth (10:33.62), Tate Sweeney was seventh (10:45.37), and Bit Klecker placed 10th (11:19.86).
Owen Hoeft was just shy of making the Gophers' all-time list in the men's 1,500 meters as he ran a career-best time of 3:43.64 for third place. Jordan MacIntosh finished sixth (3:46.25), Eli Hoeft was ninth (3:47.61), and Hunter Lucas came in 10th (3:48.04) as the Gopher men put four in the top 10 of the men's 1,500 meters; all four posted career-best times. Meanwhile, Anastasia Korzenowski joined B. Hasz in putting a stamp on Minnesota's all-time list Friday night, running a career-best time of 4:20.99 for sixth place in the women's 1,500 meters and moving into 10th among all-time Gophers.
Less than one second separated the top three Gophers in the women's 800 meters as Erin Reidy ran a career-best 2:10.02 for sixth place, followed by Molly Roach (career-best 2:10.16) in seventh, and Sophie Schmitz (season-best 2:10.58) in eighth. On the men's side, Seth Eliason ran a career-best 1:51.54 for sixth place in the men's 800 meters as well.
Minnesota's mid-distance women secured a runner-up showing in the 4x400-meter relay as Schmitz, Reidy, Ava Hill, and Hannah Constable ran 3:54.52 for second place.
Jaycie Thomsen closed out the meet for the Gophers, finishing sixth in the women's 10,000 meters in a season-opening time of 35:17.06.
The Gophers return to competition next week, splitting the squad at a pair of meets. Members of the team will return to Bloomington, Ind., for the Big Ten Indiana Invitational #3 while another group of Gophers will travel to Prairie View, Texas, for the Big Ten Prairie View Invitational on Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 17.
