Throwers Lead Gophers on Friday

Kaleb Siekmeier and Kostas Zaltos won events to lead Minnesota on day one at the Husker B1G Invitational.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Kaleb Siekmeier won men's discus and Kostas Zaltos won men's hammer throw to lead Minnesota on day one at the Husker B1G Invitational in Prairie View, Texas, on Friday.

Siekmeier won his second discus title in as many competitions with a throw of 55.07m (180-08 ft.) while Zaltos picked up his third hammer throw title of the season with a mark of 66.00m (216-06 ft.). Behind Zaltos, Siekmeier finished as hammer throw runner-up with a career-best throw of 59.86m (196-04 ft.) and Phillipe Barnett was third (58.15m, 190-09 ft.).

On the women's side, Shelby Frank led the Maroon & Gold with a third-place showing in discus and a career-best throw of 52.49m (172-02 ft.). Devia Brown posted a season-best mark in fourth place (51.32m, 168-04 ft.). Erin Dunning led the women in hammer throw with a seventh-place finish and added an eighth-place finish in discus as well. 

Hannah Morris recorded a season-best mark of 6.04m (19-09.75 ft.) to finish third in women's long jump to round out Minnesota's top performers in the field events on day one of competition in Texas.

Through day one of the multi-events, Hannah Arason is in sixth place in the heptathlon with 3,065 points after recording career-best marks in the 100m hurdles (14.74), shot put (11.00m, 36-01.25 ft.) and 200m (26.10). Meanwhile, Wyatt Lubarski is making his decathlon debut for the Gophers and is in 14th place with 3,347 points through five events with PRs in shot put (11.90m, 39-00.50 ft.) and the 400m (50.47).

On the track, Abigail Schaaffe (59.46) and Val Larson (59.72) used career-best times to finish second and fourth, respectively, in the 400m hurdles. Schaaffe improved her time at 10th on Minnesota's all-time list with her performance. On the men's side, graduate transfer Noah Burton made his debut for the Maroon & Gold with an eighth-place finish in the 400m hurdles in 53.14 seconds. Amira Young and Kion Benjamin both advanced to Saturday's 100m finals as well.

Four Gophers represented the Maroon & Gold at the B1G Indiana Invite #3 on Friday night in Bloomington, Ind., as well. Alec Basten (3:44.54) and Eli Hoeft (3:46.03) each recorded career-best times in the 1,500m, placing fifth and ninth, respectively, while Jordan MacIntosh  (career-best 13:56.13) and Owen Hoeft (14:00.23) finished eighth and ninth in the 5,000 meters.

The Husker B1G Invitational resumes with a full slate of competition on Saturday.
