‘U’ Edged by Maryland in Ninth Inning

The Gophers close out this weekend’s Big Ten series with Maryland on Sunday, May 2 at 11:00 a.m. CT.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite a great start from Jack Liffrig, the Gopher baseball program was unable to pick up the win on Saturday, falling to Maryland 4-3 at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
The quality outing from Liffrig was not enough for Minnesota (4-25) as the left-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out two. Nolan Burchill also threw an inning on the mound while Noah DeLuga (0-1) threw the final 1.2 innings and recorded the loss. Sean Fisher (2-3) picked up the win for Maryland (18-13).
Ronald Sweeny led the way offensively for the Golden Gophers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a two-run home run, a walk and two RBIs. Brett Bateman provided a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a double while Drew Stahl accounted for Minnesota's third run.
After Maryland led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run, Minnesota plated two runs in the top of the second when Sweeny left the yard with junior Chase Stanke aboard for his team-leading sixth home run of the year.
When the Terrapins rallied to tie the ballgame at two, the Gophers came back to retake the lead in the seventh inning. Stahl came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota, which brought the Golden Gophers lead to 3-2. The Gophers were unable to hold the lead as Maryland plated the equalizer in the seventh and earned the win with a walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth.
