Gophers Sweep B1G Steeplechase Titles

Alec Basten and Abby Kohut-Jackson swept the Big Ten 3,000-meter steeplechase titles to lead the Gophers on Saturday.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. --Ā Alec Basten and Abby Kohut-Jackson swept the Big Ten Conference 3,000-meter steeplechase titles to lead the Golden Gophers on day two at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday in Champaign, Ill.Ā
Basten ran a career-best time of 8:33.79, the third-fastest men's time in the NCAA so far this season, on the way to his Big TenĀ crown before Kohut-Jackson followed up with a Minnesota women's program record time of 9:47.51 to win and complete the Maroon & Gold sweep. The steeplechase crowns marked Minnesota's third and fourth B1G titles of the competitionĀ after Kostas Zaltos (men's hammer throw) and Bethany Hasz (women's 10,000 meters) won their respective events on Friday.
The Gophers als received a podium finish fromĀ Kaleb SiekmeierĀ on Saturday as he led the Gophers in men's discus with a throw ofĀ 57.96m (190-02 ft.) for a runner-up finish.
Saturday's B1G action saw the two-day heptathlon and the decathlon competitions come to a close. Hannah Arason and Teddy FridĀ both recorded career-best scores and picked up valuable points for the Gophers in the team standings as Arason placed fifth in the heptathlon and Frid finished sixth in the decathlon.
Arason scored a career-best 5,303 points in the heptathlon to place fifth and secure four points for the Gophers. Her score also moved her into fifth in Minnesota history. Arason wrapped up the event with career bests in the long jump (5.60m, 18-04.50 ft.) and 800 meters (2:27.00) and a second-place finish in javelin (42.67m, 140-00 ft.). Meanwhile,Ā Frid scored a career-best 7,482 points in the decathlon to place sixth at the meet, secure three points for the Gophers in the team standings, and move into seventh in Minnesota history. His day two performance was highlighted by a career-best time ofĀ 4:33.55 for fourth place in the 1,500 meters and a fifth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles inĀ 14.61 seconds.
In other field event action for the Gophers on Saturday, Allison Gerads and Hannah Morris tied for seventh in women's long jump and combined for three points in the team standings whileĀ Devia Brown tied her season best with a mark of 16.85m (55-03.50 ft.) in women's shot put to finish eighth and score one point in the team race.
Through six of 21 B1G events scored, the Gopher women are in first place with 37 points in the team standings. On the men's side, Minnesota is in fourth place with 41.33 points through nine of 21 events scored.
Kion Benjamin (100m), Amira Young (100m), Lexi Romero (100m), Ben Psicihulis (400m), Val Larson (400m), Janielle Josephs (400m), and Anastasia Korzenowski (800m)Ā all recorded qualifying performances in Saturday's preliminary heats to advance to Sunday's finals in their respective events.Ā Josephs' 400-meter preliminary time was a career-bestĀ 54.57 seconds, moving her into 10th in Minnesota history, andĀ Julia Hayes ran a career-best time of 13.91 seconds in the 100m hurdles prelims to move into seventh in Minnesota history.
