Gophers Punch Tickets to NCAA Championships

Day four of the NCAA West Preliminary saw four individuals and one relay team earn NCAA bids for the Gophers.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Four individual Gophers and one relay team punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships as the NCAA West Preliminary came to a close on Saturday in College Station, Texas. In total, the University of Minnesota track & field program has earned 11 entries into the national championship meet.
Minnesota's Big Ten Conference 3,000-meter steeplechase champions Abby Kohut-Jackson and Alec Basten both advanced to the NCAA Championships as automatic qualifiers. Kohut-Jackson placed second in her heat and third overall in 9:46.96, improving on her own Minnesota program record time and securing her spot at the national meet, while Basten won his heat in 8:40.14 and placed eighth overall. Meanwhile, Carissa Dock joined Kohut-Jackson in the women's race and finished 27th in 10:30.36 in her NCAA West Prelim debut.
B1G 10,000-meter champion and 5,000-meter runner-up Bethany Hasz punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 5,000 meters by finishing fourth in her heat and eighth overall with a time of 16:00.44. She returns to the national meet after finishing as NCAA runner-up in the indoor 5,000 meters this season and placing 10th in the outdoor 5,000 meters in 2019.
Minnesota's women's 4x400-meter relay team of Jayla Campbell, Val Larson, Janielle Josephs, and Abigail Schaaffe, which also won the B1G 4x400-meter relay title, rounded out the Gophers' national championship qualifiers on the track as the quartet finished 12th to earn its bid to the NCAA Championships.
Saturday's competition also saw Shelby Frank become the sixth Gopher to qualify for this year's NCAA Championships in the throws with a 12th-place finish in women's discus. Frank recorded a throw of 54.61m (179-02 ft.), just shy of her career-best mark of 54.65m (179-03 ft.) to extend her season. Meanwhile, Erin Dunning placed 29th in women's discus with a mark of 49.95m (163-10 ft.) as well.
The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Tiera Robinson-Jones, Lexi Romero, Lauren Hansen, and Amira Young finished 15th in 44.99 seconds. In their individual events, Young placed 20th in the women's 100-meter quarterfinals in 11.53 seconds, and Robinson-Jones placed 44th in women's triple jump in her NCAA West Prelim debut. In other events on the track, Schaaffe placed 16th in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.57 seconds, and Anastasia Korzenowski finished 20th in the women's 800-meter quarterfinals in 2:06.80.
On the men's side, Ben Psicihulis placed 18th in the men's 400-meter quarterfinals in 46.74 seconds. He also ran third on Minnesota's 4x400-meter relay team and led off Minnesota's 4x100-meter relay team. Psicihulis teamed up with Kion Benjamin, Finn Schirmer, and Aarron Westmoreland to run a 24th-place time of 40.54 seconds in the 4x100-meter relay before joining Elliott Davis, Collin Sieffert, and Teddy Frid to place 23rd in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:10.43.
Frid rounds out Minnesota's NCAA qualifiers as he will represent the Maroon & Gold in the decathlon. The multi-events are not contested at the preliminary championships.
The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held Wednesday, June 9 through Saturday, June 12 in Eugene, Ore.
