Men’s Golf Opens 100th Season at Marquette Intercollegiate

The University of Minnesota men's golf program begins its 2021-22 season when it tees off at the Marquette Intercollegiate on Sunday at the Erin Hills Golf Course in Hartford, Wis. The three-day tournament features 18 holes each day with play beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday and Monday, and 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Live results will be available courtesy of Golfstat.

This will be the first fall tournament in which the Gophers will compete since the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 20-22, 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 fall season.

Home of the 2017 U.S. Open, Erin Hills Golf Course is truly a championship caliber venue. The par 72 course spans 7,731 yards, and sediment deposits from 15,000 glaciers give the course its trademark rolling hills, dark soil, and naturalistic beauty. Known for narrow, slanted fairways, Erin Hills was rated the ninth-greatest public course in the United States by GolfDigest in 2019.

Minnesota will compete with five Big Ten opponents in the field of 17 teams that includes Iowa, Marquette, ETSU, Houston, Kansas, Liberty, Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, South Florida, USC, Texas A&M, UC Davis, and Wisconsin.

Junior Connor Glynn leads the Gophers in the No. 1 spot of the lineup, followed by Antoine Sale, Will Grevlos, Ben Warian and Eduardo Galdos

Glynn competed in six tournaments during the spring of 2021, finishing tied for second on the team with two top-20 finishes and 83.3 percent of scores counted. Owning a 75.67 scoring mark, Glynn matched his best finish of the season with a tie for 20th at the Big Ten Championships. He also took 20th at the Git R Done Husker Invitational with a season-best 6-over 219.

A native of Saint Pierre, France, Sale recently finished his sophomore season at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, where he claimed five individual tournament victories while leading IHCC to four team titles. His season scoring average was 70.73. For his efforts, Sale was named First Team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America, and he also earned All-American status with his 14th-place finish at the NJCAA Championships.

Grevlos saw action in two events during the 2021 spring season, claiming a 77.33 average. He won both his matches at the Big Ten Match Play Championship and tied for 127th at The Goodwin.

In 2020-21, Warian was second on the team in top-20 finishes (2) and third in scoring average (74.93), rounds under par (2) and top-10 finishes (1). His best tournament came at the Boilermaker Invitational where he posted career bests for finish (t-9th), score to par (-2) and 54-hole score (214). Warian was named Minnesota's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree at the conclusion of the season.

A Lima, Peru native, Galdos will make his Gophers debut on the course. The freshman has competed in five professional events, finishing 13th or better in all four Peru Golf Association events he has competed in, including second place at the Abierto #5 and third at the Abierta de Golf Mazda. He made his PGA Tour Latin America debut in October of 2019 at the Diners Club Peru Open.

In addition to the five Gophers in the lineup, Harrison Arnold and Bennett Swavely will compete as individuals.

Arnold competed in four tournaments this past season, posting a 75.71 scoring average in seven rounds. His best finish came at the Hoosier Collegiate Invitational when he tied for 34th, and he had one of three eagles for the Gophers this year when he accomplished the feat in the second round of the Boilermaker Invitational.

Swavely, a freshman at Minnesota, was a two-time first team All-Big Rivers Conference player and was an honorable mention all-state selection in 2020. He helped his team to a seventh-place finish at the 2019 state tournament, the second best finish in the program's three trips to the event. In August of 2019 he won the WSGA Junior Boys Championship with a three-shot victory, a tournament whose past winners include PGA Tour veteran Steve Stricker and former Gopher Thomas Longbella. In September of 2020 he claimed second at the CVGA Championship in Eau Claire, Wis.

Following Erin Hills, the Gophers will host the Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club held Sunday, Sept. 12 and Monday, Sept. 13 at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. The tournament is free to attend for all fans and supporters.

As Minnesota competes in its 100th season during 2021-22, the program will salute the previous ten decades of the historic program along with the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Big Ten Championship and 20th anniversary of the 2002 National Championship. Throughout the centennial season, Minnesota will select and honor the top moments, players and coaches in team history. Fans and supporters can follow along on social media and gophersports.com.
