Season Starts for Swimming and Diving Saturday

10/14/2022 9:06:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS – The 2022-23 season gets underway for the Minnesota swimming and diving programs this weekend with a visit to Lincoln, Neb. The women will face the Huskers and the University of South Dakota in a tri-dual, while the men will take on the Coyotes.

The meet is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at the Devaney Center Natatorium. The meet will be streamed on YouTube and live results will be available on the MeetMobile app.

The Gopher men return the top swimmer in every individual event from last year's squad that tied for 19th at the NCAA Championships.

Highlighting the men's roster is fifth-year senior Max McHugh, the two-time defending national champion in the 100 breast. McHugh also was the national runner-up in the 200 breast after winning in 2021, setting school records in both events. At the Big Ten level, he's the three-time defending champ in the 100 breast and won each of the last two 200 breast titles.

The Golden Gophers also return sophomore Bar Soloveychik, a second-team All-American a year ago in the 500 free. Five individual school records were set last year, and Soloveychik was responsible for two of them with the 200 free and 500 free.

The last record set went to senior Desmon Sachtjen, who posted the fastest time ever by a Gopher in the 200 back. Sachtjen also had the top time in the 100 back and tied for the best in the 200 IM, leaving him as one of six Gophers last season to post the top time in multiple events.

In addition to McHugh, Soloveychik and Sachtjen, the feat was also accomplished by redshirt junior Lucas Farrar (50, 100 free) and fellow juniors Chris Nagy (1000, 1650 free) and Kaiser Neverman (100 fly, 200 fly, 200 IM).

Men's diving will need to replace its top three performers from last season and will rely on freshman Drew Bennett. He's one of nine newcomers to the team this year along with Jack Ballard (free/IM), Connor Groya (free), Alberto Hernández (back/IM), Drew Kistler (breast/IM), Luke Leonidas (back),Yah Salunke (fly/free), Lovro Serdarevic (free/back) and Denton Smith (free/fly).

The Minnesota women return the top performers in 11 of the 14 individual events from a team that took 21st last season at the NCAA Championships.

Highlighting the returners is junior Megan Van Berkom, who was a second-team All-American and Big Ten champion in the 400 IM a year ago. She also set school records in the 200 fly and 200 IM and had the fastest time on the team in the 500 free.

Van Berkom is joined by five other swimmers that competed at last year's NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Hannah Cornish was the Gophers' top swimmer a year ago in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free and swam each event at NCAAs, while senior Emma Lezer represented the Gophers in the 100 and 200 breast. Fifth-year senior Olivia Bloomer and fourth-year seniors Jordan McGinty and Maggie Summit also competed at the NCAAs in relay events.

In addition, the Gophers also return the top performers in the 1000 free (sophomore Eliot Kennedy) and 200 back (junior Paula Rodriguez Rivero).

In the diving well, Minnesota saw the graduation of five-time NCAA champion Sarah Bacon but returning is Joy Zhu, who claimed a pair of top-three finishes on the 1- and 3-meter boards at the Big Ten Championships.

Like the men's program, the Minnesota women also feature nine newcomers this year in Addie Albrecht (diving), Vivi Del Angel (diving), Grace Drabot (IM/breast/free), Ava Gustafson (breast), Faith Johnson (back/fly), Brigitta Neverman (fly/IM/back), Summer Schmit (free/IM/fly), Ella Smith (breast/IM/free) and Ava Yablonski (back/free/fly).

Nebraska enters the meet 1-0 on the season following a 151-111 victory at South Dakota State on Oct. 7. Lexi Kucera collected a relay win and a pair of individual victories in the 200 free and 50 fly to help Nebraska to its win. The Huskers have one more meet before the Gophers come for a visit Saturday, hosting Iowa State Friday afternoon.

Last season, the Golden Gophers posted a 189-107 home triumph over Nebraska.

Saturday will mark the opening event for the South Dakota men, while the women started the season with a 184-115 win at Minnesota State last Friday. Emily Kahn was a part of four victories (50 free, 100 free, 200 free relay, 200 medley relay) for the Coyotes and was named the TicketSmarter Summit League Women's Peak Swimmer of the Week for her performance.
