Gophers Earn 18 Event Titles at 2022 Snowshoe Open

2/18/2022 8:50:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field team earned 18 event titles at the 2022 Snowshoe Open on Friday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse in Minneapolis, Minn. The Golden Gophers day was highlighted by Shelby Frank in the women's weight throw, throwing the fifth-best mark in school history and the No. 2 mark in the Big Ten this season just a week out from the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

Frank, who is in her second season in the Maroon and Gold uniform, tossed a mark of 21.30m (69-10 3/4) to claim the victory in the event over the likes of teammate Tess Keyzers (19.99m) and Antonella Creazzola of Iowa State (18.59m). Frank's mark improves her to No. 5 on Minnesota's all-time indoor top 10 list, moving up from the No. 6 spot. The personal best toss improves the sophomores standing to No. 23 in the nation heading into the  postseason. The top 16 make the NCAA Indoor Championships, which currently is 21.69m (Angel Nkwonta, Maryland).

Minnesota's other best nationally ranked performance on Friday came in the form of freshman high jumper Nyalaam Jok at 1.78m (5-10). Jok, who has leaped over 1.77m or higher four times this season, is currently ranked No. 34 in the nation and No. 5 in the Big Ten.

Among the unattached men's student-athletes that competed, Matt Wilkinson was clearly the highlight in the men's mile. The senior from Greenwood, Minn., set a new meet record of 4:03.48 (4:01.09 converted) to win the event. The 4:03.48 was just a second off of the facility record that was set all the way back in 1977 by Mike Slack, who also ran that meet unattached. Right behind Wilkinson in the mile was teammates Alec Basten (4:04.05/4:01.66) in second and Jack Manderscheid (4:04.37/4:01.98) in third.

Returning to action was Lauren Hansen in both the 60m and 200m where the redshirt junior picked up a pair of victories on Friday afternoon. The Orono, Minn., native clocked a new personal best time in the 60m at 7.58 and followed that up with a 24.90 (24.52 converted) in the 200m to finish up her three-race afternoon.

Back amongst the field events Mike Herauf had a career day in the men's pole vault. The senior eclipsed 17-feet indoors for the first time in his career with a winning vault of 5.19m (17-0 1/4) to easily win the event. Herauf's indoor personal best in the event entering the season was 5.15m (16-10 3/4) with his overall personal best indoors or outdoors being 5.25m (17-2 3/4).

Lexy Berger joined Herauf's indoor best with one of her own on the women's side. She sophomore vaulted to a mark of 4.08m (13-4 1/2) to win the event and puts her at No. 12 amongst Big Ten pole vaulters heading into the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

On top of Frank's career-best weight throw, Kostas Zaltos tossed his own best mark in the event with a 21.13m (69-4) to win the event in style while teammate Kyle Atkinson won the shot put at 18.31m (60-1) to give the unattached athletes a pair of wins in the throws.

Of Minnesota's remaining victories Carissa Dock's 10:05.17 (10:00.03 converted) in the 3000m was the final personal best for the Gophers. Dock's performance knocked down her previous best time that was set all the way back in 2020 by 18 seconds.
