Minnesota takes the doubles point, unable to close out singles matches
The University of Minnesota women's tennis team returned to Baseline Tennis center for their first home match in nearly two months. Today's match marked the Big Ten home opener for the Gophers, as they welcomed the No. 26 Wolverines. Michigan was the third consecutive ranked opponent for Minnesota, the highest of all matchups. A win would have been the seventh consecutive in Minneapolis without a defeat on the season.
After earning the doubles point, Minnesota was unable to carry momentum into the final results, as the Wolverines took five of six singles competitions. The match concluded 2-5, in favor of the visitors. Upon today's result, Minnesota falls to 12-6 on the year, 0-3 in the Big Ten.
The Gophers won at doubles positions No. 2 and No. 3, adding a win at singles No. 4. The singles point came courtesy of Vasia Karvouni.
In doubles play, Michigan's No. 74 ranked pairing of Jaedan Brown and Andrea Cerdan defeated Emilee Duong and Maria Rizzolo. This was their first pairing together of the year, as they played at No. 1. Trailing by one game, Minnesota needed each of the two remaining contests. Anfisa Danilchenko and Lucy Lu lost the first two games, but rebounded completely. They won six consecutive games and knotted the doubles at one apiece. With the No. 2 position set to decide the point, Rachel Hanford and Dalila Said worked the Gophers into a lead, as they took three of the last four games en route to victory.
After No. 73 Jaedan Brown's straight set win at the third position, the match was tied at one. Vasia Karvouni earned her first ranked win of the season, taking down No. 111 Andrea Cerdan. Karvouni led for nearly the entirety of each set, closing it out at 6-3, 7-5.
At each of the remaining positions, Michigan earned the point. Anfisa Danilchenko and Dalila Said each played back and forth matches, forcing at least twelve games in every set. The Gophers went 0-5 in tiebreak sets on the afternoon. At the first position, Rachel Hanford utilized a dominant second set to take No. 11 Kari Miller to a third set. After forcing it to the final tiebreaker, she was unable to close it out, coming just four points shy of her second ranked win. Emilee Duong's third set went in favor of Michigan, as she battled the entirety of the afternoon.
