Minnesota Adds Third Ranked Win of the Season

Gophers defeat No. 70 Michigan State, 4-0

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team took on their second Michigan opponent of the weekend, as they hosted the Spartans at Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers looked to rebound from their hard-fought defeat against No. 26 Michigan, as they opposed No. 70 Michigan State. Minnesota jumped out to an early lead through doubles, and never conceded momentum.

After earning the doubles point, Minnesota won at each singles position. The match finished 4-0, earning a weekend split for the Gophers. Minnesota improved to 13-6 on the season, 1-3 in the Big Ten, and 7-1 in home matches.

The Gophers won at doubles positions No. 1 and No. 2, securing the first point for Minnesota.  

In doubles play, Emilee Duong and Ekin Ercetin put in a complete performance, besting Maja Pietrowicz and Dagmar Zdrubecka without losing a game. The pairing improved to 2-1 on the season, each of their matches being played at No. 1. At the second position, Rachel Hanford and Maria Rizzolo closed out the point for Minnesota, 6-3. Anfisa Danilchenko and Lucy Lu's match went unfinished on account of previous results.

In singles, Minnesota posted victories at positions No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5. At the second position, Emilee Duong won consecutive 6-3 sets, defeating Nicole Stephens. At No. 4, Ekin Ercetin cruised to a first set win. After falling behind by two games in the second set, she won six consecutive to extend the Gophers lead to three. Vasia Karvouni closed out her impressive weekend, as she earned her second win in three days, following her ranked match against Michigan. 

Rachel Hanford, Maria Rizzolo, and Anfisa Danilchenko's matches each went unfinished as a result of prior points. 

Next Up:
Minnesota will play their first split weekend of the year, as they host Rutgers on Friday before traveling to Maryland. The Gophers will look to remain unbeaten as a program against the Scarlet Knights, winners of each of the teams' nine meetings. Live statistics and streaming will be available through Gopher Sports.
