Gophers Earn Second Straight Big Ten Win at Baseline

4/1/2022 5:05:00 PM | Tennis

Minnesota defeats Rutgers 7-0, improves to 14-6 on the season

On Friday, the University of Minnesota women's tennis team competed in their third consecutive match at Baseline Tennis Center, as they welcomed the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The Gophers were coming off a convincing 4-0 win last Sunday, as they defeated No. 70 Michigan State. They continued their home success this afternoon, besting Rutgers, 7-0. Minnesota secured the doubles point, before going on to win every singles match.

With Friday's victory, the Gophers improved to 14-6 on the season, 2-3 in Big Ten matches. They have matched their win total achieved in 2018 and 2019, and will look to surpass that figure on Sunday. Rutgers remains winless in the Big Ten as well as against Minnesota as a program. This meeting marked the tenth match between the two programs, with the Gophers winning each contest.

The Golden Gophers won at doubles positions No. 1 and No. 2, giving the hosts an early lead.

In doubles play, Emilee Duong and Ekin Ercetin started the afternoon out in dominant fashion. The pair wasted no time, as they won each of the six games played. At the second position, Rachel Hanford and Dalila Said picked up their second win in as many matches played together, as they defeated Minchae Kim and Alisa Prinyarux, 6-1. At No. 3, Anfisa Danilchenko and Lucy Lu's match went unfinished on account of previous results.

Minnesota posted singles victories at each position, securing their 7-0 win.

Rachel Hanford made quick work in her victory at No. 1. She defeated Tess Fisher 6-0, 6-1, earning her fourth win of the Big Ten season. At No. 4, Ekin Ercetin went perfect, winning each of the twelve games en route to a straight set victory. Maria Rizzolo's consecutive 6-2 sets clinched the match for Minnesota, and earned them their second home conference win.

At No. 6, Anfisa Danilchenko earned her second singles win of her first Big Ten season. Emilee Duong contributed her tenth win of the season, as she improved to a winning record in conference play. Vasia Karvouni closed the match, adding a win to her team-leading total, as she now sets the pace with 13.
