Gophers Taking Talent To Baton Rouge

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program is headed to Baton Rogue for the 2022 Alumni Gold at LSU. Minnesota will also have a group of student-athletes competing at the Holst Invitational at Concordia St. Paul. Teams competing at LSU include Alcorn State, LSU, University of Miami, Minnesota, Penn State, Southeastern Louisiana and Central Florida (women only).
About the 2022 Alumni Gold
The LSU Alumni Gold event will be contested all on Saturday, April 23, with the first event starting at 9:30 a.m. with the women's discus and starting on the track at 1:30 p.m. with the 4x100m relay. The meet, which is taking place at Bernie Moore Track Stadium, can be followed on DeltaTiming.com. The meet is not streamed or available to watch online. The meet is free to attend and is not a team scored meet.
A full list of the teams competing in Baton Rouge includes Alcorn State, Brown, Miami, Minnesota, New Mexico, Penn State, Southeastern, Southern, UCF (women only) and the University of New Orleans.
About the 2022 Holst Invitational
Held at Sea Foam Stadium and hosted by Concordia St. Paul, the Holst Invitational will be held on Friday and Saturday. The hammer and discus will be contested on Friday while the remainder of the events will be conducted on Saturday. The first event on Friday begins at noon while on Saturday the action begins at 10 a.m. on the track and in the field.
There are tickets available to attend the meet, all online. Tickets prices will be $6 for adults, $4 for seniors, $4 for Youth (ages 6-12) and $4 for non-CSP students with a college ID. Children ages 5 and under are free.
Last Time Out: Distance Crew Rewrites Record Book in California
The University of Minnesota track and field team competed at three different meets last week, competing at the St. Thomas Tom Cat Invite, the Mt. SAC Relays and the Bryan Clay Invitational. The distance crew posted five new top 10 program times during the competition while the Gophers at St. Thomas picked up eight victories. The men's distance crew once again had a great weekend of action, posting three different top 10 times, all coming in the 5000m. Matthew Wilkinson posted a time of 13:35.45 in the 5000m to take fifth, good enough for the second-best time in program history and a top 10 time in the nation this season. Wilkinson also is currently ranked fifth in the nation in the 3000m steeplechase. Alec Basten joined Wilkinson in the fun, posting the third-fastest time in school history in the same event at 13:39.03. His time improves his previous top 10 mark and has him now top 20 in the event in the country while also No. 7 in the 3000m steeplechase. Owen Hoeft was the final Gopher to post a top 10 time in the event, throwing down the No. 10 time in Minnesota history at 13:51.97. Owen's brother Eli Hoeft was also making moves in the record book. His 3:42.81 put him into the top 10 in the 1500m, his first time being in the program top 10 in his career. Minnesota's final top 10 time came from Anastasia Korzenowski in the 800m. The redshirt senior from Chanhassen, Minn., clocked a 2:05.14 in the 800m at the Bryan Clay Invitational, good enough for the second best time in the Big Ten this season and the 21st best time in the country.
Gopher Men's Hammer Ranked First in the Nation
In the latest edition of the USTFCCCA's #EventSquad rankings the Golden Gophers had their men's hammer throw team ranked No. 1 in the nation. With the combination of Kosts Zaltos, Jake Kubiatowicz, Kaleb Siekmeier and Carter Hughes, the Gophers have an average season-best mark of 64.91m (213-0) which is over two meters higher than Long Beach State's crew and three meters better than the next best team in the Midwest Region in Southeast Missouri.
In other #EventSquad rankings the Gopher men are ranked No. 6 in the nation in the 3000m Steeplechase and 10th in the 5000m and on the women's side have top 20 squads in the 3000m steeplechase (No. 9), 400m hurdles (No. 16), 100m (No. 16) and in hammer (No. 16).
Record Book Watchin'
So far during the outdoor season the Golden Gophers have posted 24 new program top 10 times as of April 21. On the men's side there have been nine different top 10 performances while on the women's team there have been 15 so far this season.
The highest program top 10 performance on the men's side was the school-record performance by the 4x100m relay team that consisted of Jaydon Antoine, Kion Benjamin, Finn Schirmer and Aarron Westmoreland in a time of 39.62. Individually, Matthew Wilkinson has the best top 10 performance in the 5000m at 13:35.45, a time that was put down last week in California. On the women's side both Anastasia Korzenowski and Shelby Frank have posted the No. 2 performance in the 800m (2:05.14) and discus throw (57.31m | 188-0), respectively.
Minnesota To Host 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championships
For the first time since opening their new state-of-the-art outdoor track and field facility, the University of Minnesota will be the hosts of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in May. Located in the heart of the new Athletes Village area, the nine-lane track with the Beynon 2000 surface will be the focal point of the Midwest's top track and field student-athletes from May 13-15.
