Drake Relays Await Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program will have student-athletes at three different meets this weekend with the Drake Relays being the highlight of the weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. The Gophers will compete against the likes of Michigan, Nebraska, Purdue, Illinois, North Carolina A&T, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, and many more. 

About the 2022 Drake Relays
The 112th edition of the Drake Relays runs from Sunday, April 24, until Saturday, April 30. Thursday's action will be where the Gophers begin their competition in Des Moines with the Distance Carnival that runs from 5 p.m. until 9:19 p.m. There are multiple divisions contested throughout the meet, including the youth division, boys/girls, college/university and more. 

Friday and Saturday's action will begin as early as 8 a.m. on both days with the Drake Relays concluding at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets to attend are available here. 

About the 2022 Kip Janvrin Open
Taking place at Buxton Stadium, the Gophers will have 14 student-athletes attending the meet in Indianola, Iowa. The meet, formerly named the Simpson Twilight, will begin on Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m. with eight heats of the 5000m. The rest of the meet will take place on Friday, beginning in the field at 10 a.m. and on the track at 11 a.m. The meet can be followed through live results on BlackSquirrelTiming.com. The meet is free to enter for fans. 

About the 2022 Rider/Bolstorff Invite
Held at Macalester Stadium, the Golden Gophers will have 10 student-athletes compete across both track and field events. A total of 10 teams will compete at the meet with events starting at 9 a.m. with the hammer throw and on the track at 11 a.m. with the 4x100m relay. The meet will be on a rolling schedule and it is free the enter the event. 

Last Time Out: Frank Breaks School Record to Highlight Big Day in Baton Rouge
The University of Minnesota track and field saw its discus record go down last weekend along with 11 total program top 10 marks and times at the LSU Alumni Gold meet in Baton Rouge, La. Shelby Frank wasted no time in the first event of the day which began at 9:30 a.m. local time. Frank launched her fifth throw 58.00m (190-3) to win the event down in the Bayou, but also propel herself to the No. 5 position in the NCAA along with the No. 1 mark in the Big Ten this season. 

On top of Frank's performance, Finn Schirmer in the 100m(No. 2, 11.28), Tiera Robinson-Jones (No. 3, 13.14m) in the triple jump, Janielle Josephs (52.73, No. 3) and Jayla Campbell (53.48, No. 4) in the 400m all posted top five program times and marks as well. 

Gopher Men's Hammer Ranked First in the Nation
In the latest edition of the USTFCCCA's #EventSquad rankings the Golden Gophers had their men's hammer throw team ranked No. 1 in the nation. With the combination of Kosts Zaltos, Jake Kubiatowicz, Kaleb Siekmeier and Carter Hughes, the Gophers have an average season-best mark of 64.91m (213-0) which is over two meters higher than Long Beach State's crew and three meters better than the next best team in the Midwest Region in Southeast Missouri. 

In other #EventSquad rankings the Gopher men are ranked No. 7 in the nation in the 3000m Steeplechase and 15th in the 5000m and on the women's side have top 20 squads in the 400m hurdles (No. 10), the 3000m steeplechase (No. 12), the hammer throw (No. 12) and in the 100m (No. 15). 

Frank Named B1G Field Athlete of the Week
University of Minnesota sophomore Shelby Frank was honored by the Big Ten Conference as the Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday for her performance at the LSU Alumni Gold in Baton Rouge, La. 

Frank became the school's record holder in the discus with a toss of 58.00m (190-3) to win the event. Her mark, which she threw on her fifth attempt, puts her fifth in the nation this year and first among Big Ten throwers. Frank became the first Gopher to reach the 58-meter mark in the event and broke Agness Esser's record that was in place since 2018. She's also the seventh Big Ten student-athlete in history to throw a mark at least 58 meters and her mark is the seventh career-best mark in conference history. 

Minnesota To Host 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championships 
For the first time since opening their new state-of-the-art outdoor track and field facility, the University of Minnesota will be the hosts of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in May. Located in the heart of the new Athletes Village area, the nine-lane track with the Beynon 2000 surface will be the focal point of the Midwest's top track and field student-athletes from May 13-15.
