MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers track and field team is set to host the 2023 Jack Johnson Classic from Jan. 27-28 at the U of MN Fieldhouse. The action will be the first home meet for the Gophers since the Minnesota Icebreaker back in December.

About the 2023 Jack Johnson Classic
The action in Minneapolis will mostly be contested on Saturday with Friday's action primarily being the pentathlon and heptathlon as well as the women's pole vault. Saturday's competition will start as early as 9:30 a.m. with the men's open pole vault. Track events will start at 11:15 and run until 5:25 p.m. with the 4x400m relay. Live results can be followed on WayzataTiming.com.

Last Time Out: Cyclone Open
The University of Minnesota track and field program won seven events at the Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa, on Jan. 21. The Gophers sprint group won four out of the five individual sprint events and added a win in the 4x400m relay to cap off the meet.

Reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Week Amira Young was a winner in both of her contested events on Saturday, winning the 60m and the 200m. In the 60m Young posted her best time in nearly two full calendar years with a 7.28, which goes down as the No. 14 time in the country this season. Young was followed up by two other Gophers with Akilah Lewis finishing in a lifetime best of 7.29, which is the No. 17 time in the nation this season, and the No. 3 time in program history.

Young's 200m victory was clocked at 23.72, putting her at the No. 30 spot in the nation in the event this season. Young's time edged Frye who finished with a personal best of 24.10, which is the No. 3 time in program history. The sprint group continued its assault on the program top 10 lists on Saturday with Zariyah Black and Dyandra Gray both improving their previous lifetime bests in the 60m hurdles. Black, who finished as the runner-up in the event, posted a lifetime best of 8.39, the fourth-fastest time in Minnesota history, while Gray's 8.555 (extended due a tie) put her at No. 7 in program history.

Gopher Rankings
University of Minnesota track and field was ranked No. 1 in the Midwest Regional USTFCCCA rankings that came out this past week. Individually the Maroon and Gold have six top 30 marks in the NCAA this season and have six different marks that are inside the Big Ten's top three so far this season.

Most notably, the Gophers have three No. 1 Big Ten marks this season with Nyalaam Jok (high jump) and Amira Young (60m, 200m) both atop their respective events as of Jan. 26.

Gophers to Honor Eric Walker on Saturday with Tribute
The University of Minnesota is honoring the late, great, Eric Walker at the Jack Johnson Classic on Saturday. The former Gopher, who competed from 2016-19, tragically lost his life in 2022. A specialist in the hurdles, the Gophers will honor Eric Walker's family prior to the start of the running events at 11:50 a.m. at the finish line. Entry and admission is free at the Jack Johnson Classic.
