MINNEAPOLIS – The 2023 Minnesota Invite kicked off with a pair of relay races on Wednesday night at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The Maroon and Gold found success in the 200 medley, with both the men and the women swimming their fastest times so far this year.
The women's 'A' squad of Paula Rodriguez Rivero, Ava Goodno, Morgan Thomas and Hannah Cornish placed seventh overall with a time of 1:38.47 in the 200 medley relay, the fastest time of the season by just over three seconds.
The 'B' team finished in 10th, with Faith Johnson, Ava Gustafson, Ava Yablonski and Mina Kaljevic combining for a time of 1:40.12. The 'C' group took 14th, as Elise Jacobs, Grace Drabot, Claire Reinke and Indy Jongman posted a time of 1:42.64.
On the men's side, the 'A' team of seniors Casey Stowe and Kaiser Neverman, freshman Davide Harabagiu and sophomore Lovro Serdarevic posted Minnesota's top time of the year at 1:26.23, good for a sixth-place finish. Wednesday night's showing from Minnesota's 'A' team was more than two seconds better than their previous season high.
The 'B' squad of freshman Ian Steffen, fifth year Neil Simpson, junior Tommy McCarthy and sophomore Connor Groya wasn't far behind, finishing with a time of 1:27.65, also ahead of the previous season-best score. The 'C' group trailed just behind, as freshman Ryan Slonac, junior Joe Rudd, senior Matt McDonald and freshman Omar Abdelwahab finished 10th at 1:27.98, also ahead of the previous season high of 1:28.38.
The 800 free relay followed, being swum for the first time this season.
The Gopher women's 'A' team of Mina Kaljevic, Megan Van Berkom, Hannah Cornish and Katie McCarthy finished in third at 7:08.30. Their 'B' squad came close behind in fifth, as Morgan Thomas, Jade Roghair, Indy Jongman and Anja Kaljevic combined for a time of 7:12.60.
The 'A' group for the Gopher men consisted of junior Bar Soloveychik, senior Kaiser Neverman and sophomores Lovro Serdarevic and Alberto Hernandez, and that group finished in sixth place at 6:25.05. The 'B' team of Ian Steffen, freshmen Tyler Hansen and Grant Wodny and sophomore Jack Ballard posted a time of 6:33.23, good for eighth place.
Action continues tomorrow on day two of the Minnesota Invite with prelims starting at 10 a.m., diving starting at approximately 1 p.m. and finals scheduled to start at 6 p.m. On the docket for Thursday is the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 200 relay and women's and men's 1-meter diving.
