MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota's Shelby Frank won the program's fifth weight throw conference title to open the 2023 Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The third-year Gopher used the No. 1 throw in the nation this season to win the event and put the Gophers in eighth as a team through the first day of the indoor conference championships.
Frank, a Grand Forks, N.D., native launched her mark of 24.14m (79-2 1/2) on her third attempt. During her six-throw series Frank also had marks of 23.14m, 22.38m and 21.89m. The mark for Frank is 0.01m, or one centimeter, further than Jalani Davis of Ole Miss, who tossed her mark back on Jan. 13. Frank is the third different Gopher to win the conference's weight throw competition in the last five years, joining Tess Keyzers and Kaitlyn Long.
Frank was not the only scorer for the Maroon and Gold on Friday with three other events aiding the Gophers team score. Lexy Berger posted her best indoor conference finish in the pole vault, finishing fifth overall with a clearance of 4.19m (13-9). Berger managed to get over her final clearance on her third and final attempt and pushed her from a tie for seventh into fifth and gave Minnesota four more team points.
First-year Gopher Alliyah McNeil came out of the first flight of the women's long jump to snag a point for the Golden Gophers. McNeil, who will also compete in the high jump, finished eighth in the long jump with a season-best mark of 5.95m (19-6 1/4) on her second jump of the day.
Lastly Minnesota's Distance Medley Relay earned one team point for an eighth-place finish on Friday. The squad of Libby Halbmaier, Dalayni Etienne, Sydney Kretlow and Anastasia Korzenowski clocked a time of 11:30.58 to add the point to the team's total that ended at 16 after Friday.
Minnesota's squad on the track did its job as well on Friday with a total of eight Gophers advancing out of the preliminary rounds to reach Saturday's final. First on that list was Janielle Josephs who posted a lifetime best 53.38 to finish seventh in the prelims. The time pushes Josephs to the No. 2 mark in school history and puts her in the 400m indoor final for the fourth-straight year.
The straight away Gophers were locked in on Friday with Amira Young and Akilah Lewis finishing first and second in the 60m prelims. Young, who holds the Big Ten Conference record of 7.19, posted a 7.22 to win her heat with ease. Lewis, who's 7.21 is the second-fastest time in conference history, put down a 7.25 to win her heat and advance to Saturday's final.
Just a bit later it was Erin Reidy who put down one of the most gutsy performances of the day in the 800m. Reidy, who returns to the 800m final, dropped a time of 2:05.25 to finish as the top time-qualifier and will enter Saturday's final with the No. 4 time out of the prelims. Reidy's time goes down as the No. 3 time in program history and is a top 50 NCAA time this season.
Reaching their first career Big Ten finals were sophomores Zariyah Black and Maja Maunsbach in the 60m hurdles. Maunsbach, a native of Sweden, laid down the No. 3 time in school history at 8.26 which while Black's 8.30 goes down as the No. 4 time at Minnesota. The times were good enough to advance the duo on time with Maunsbach at No. 7 and Black at No. 8 heading into Saturday's final.
For the third-straight season Abigail Schaaffe made the Big Ten's 600m final, finishing second in the preliminary round. The junior clocked a 1:29.63 to pull away in her heat and will look to win her second 600m title and first since her freshman season.
Amira Young made it two-for-two in her prelim events on Friday with a dominant showing in the 200m. The graduate student clocked the fastest time in the 200m prelims at 23.56 and will look to win the double of the 60m and 200m on Saturday for the second time in her career and the first time since 2021.
