Young Breaks Conference Record, Wins 60m and 200m Big Ten Titles

2/25/2023 4:14:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher women's track & field team finished fourth out of 13 teams on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The Golden Gophers scored a total of 78.5 points with Amira Young's sweep of the 60m and 200m being the highlight for the Maroon and Gold on Saturday.

Young started the day with an incredible performance in the 60m, breaking her own conference record of 7.19 with a time of 7.18 to win the crown for the second time in her career. Young's 7.18 was just enough to beat out teammate Akilah Lewis who finished with a time of 7.19, tying the previous conference 60m record and posting her own lifetime best in the event. In the process the duo became the first teammates to finish in first and second in the 60m since Ohio State did it in 2020.

Just a short time later Young completed the double, securing the indoor 200m title for the second time in her career and winning both for the second time in her career and the first time since 2021. In a two-heat final Young ran out of the second heat and had to beat out Lasarah Hargrove's 23.37 out of the first heat and the Chicago, Ill., native did just that by posting a 23.31, a Big Ten season-best time, to secure the victory.

Minnesota got medal performances from three other events throughout Saturday's competition. Abigail Schaaffe clocked a 1:28.73 in the 600m final to win the silver medal in the event for the second straight year. The 400m hurdle All-American ran in the second heat of the two-heat final and finished second behind Michigan's Aurora Rynda's in the heat to grab silver.

Securing a pair of bronze medal finishes was Nyalaam Jok in the high jump while the 4x400m relay team capped off the meet with a third-place finish. For Jok, her 1.80m (5-10 3/4) was good enough for the bronze and gives her two Big Ten medals in her first two seasons in Minneapolis. The mile relay squad of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Dyandra Gray and Schaaffe clocked the second-fastest time in program history at 3:34.16 to finish third.

Additionally the Maroon and Gold five other score throughout Saturday's competition. Josephs started the scoring in the 400m by laying down a second-straight personal best in the event with a time of 53.00 to finish fifth overall. The 53.00 for Josephs improves her second-fastest time in school history that she had posted on Friday.

Erin Reidy finished fourth for the second-straight season in the 800m, posting a lifetime best 2:04.91. Reidy's time improved her third-fastest time in school history that she posted Friday and was just 0.01 off of the No. 2 time set by Alena Brooks back in 2014.

Three Golden Gophers scored for the first time at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday. Sophomores Maja Maunsbach and Zariyah Black finished fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 60m hurdles while first-year Gopher Alliyah McNeil finished in a tie for eighth in the women's high jump.
