Frank Finishes as NCAA Runner-Up in Weight Throw

Frank earned the silver medal in her indoor championships debut in New Mexico.
MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota junior Shelby Frank earned an NCAA indoor runner-up finish in the women's weight throw on Friday night in Albuquerque, N.M. in her debut at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Frank's mark of 23.42m (76-10) came on her fifth throw of her series and propelled the Grand Forks, N.D., native from seventh to second. Through the preliminary throws Frank sat in seventh place with her first attempt of 22.27m (73-0 3/4) going far enough to get her to the final which included nine student-athletes. Frank entered the championships with the second-best mark in the NCAA this season at 24.14m (79-2 1/2) and finished at her seed place in her first appearance on the biggest collegiate indoor stage.
Frank's finish goes down as the second-best in the event in program history, just behind Kaitlyn Long's NCAA championship in the event in 2018. The national runner-up finish is the Gophers top individual indoor finish since Bethany Hasz finished second in the 5000m in 2021. For Minnesota the second-place finish gives the team eight team points through the first day of the championships.
On the track the Maroon and Gold saw their two qualifiers in the 60m finish with Second Team All-America honors. Amira Young was the top finisher for Minnesota in 11th place in a time of 7.21 while Akilah Lewis' 7.26 was good enough for 14th. Young's 11th-place finish is a career best in the event, besting her 13th-place finish in 2021.
