Augustine Breaks 200m School Record in Waco

3/25/2023 6:01:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher track and field program earned a total of eight event victories in Waco, Texas, at the Clyde Hart Classic at Baylor University. Minnesota also had a handful of competitors at NC State at the Raleigh Relays over the weekend.

Devin Augustine highlighted the Maroon and Gold's weekend, breaking his own 200m school record in a time of 20.49 (+1.8 m/s) on Friday afternoon. Augustine's time, as of March 25, is the No. 1 wind-legal time in the nation. Augustine's previous lifetime best in the event was 20.60 back on March 4, 2023.

Dominating in his season debut was All-American Matthew Wilkinson in the 3000m steeplechase on Thursday night at the Raleigh Relays. The grad student finished as the meet's runner-up, but his 8:29.35 was the top collegiate finisher at the meet in Raleigh. Wilkinson's time also broke the meet and facility record at Dail Soccer Field/Track Complex.

Back in Waco the Golden Gophers saw Kostas Zaltos once again dominate in the men's hammer throw. Victorious once again Zaltos launched two lifetime best marks with his second attempt reaching 73.36m (240-8) which is the No. 15 mark in the world this year. The mark for Zaltos improves his second-best mark in school history and inches him closer to the school record of 74.35m (Sean Donnelly).

Another second-best mark in school history was set by Austin Parsons in the men's javelin on Saturday. The first-year Gopher nearly matched his lifetime best in the event with a mark of 70.14m (230-01) and was less than a foot off of the school record that has stood since 1993 (Chad Rodvold).

Back on the track in Waco the Maroon and Gold saw Kion Benjamin post his best time in a collegiate race, winning the 100m in a time of 10.13, which ties the Trinidad & Tobago native for the top time in the NCAA this season. Benjamin's wind-legal time was just off of his 10.07 lifetime best in the event that he set this past summer back in his home country.

The straightaway was Minnesota's strength throughout the weekend and that was personified by Zariyah Black and Maja Maunsbach in the 100m hurdles. Black edged her teammate in a photo finish, clocking a time of 13.536 to Maunsbach's 13.54 to win. The time for Black puts her at fourth all-time in Gophers' history while Maunsbach's time jumps her up to No. 5.

Minnesota's final top-10 program time came in the penultimate race of the weekend, the women's 4x400m relay. The team of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Amira Young and Lauren Hansen put down a strong time of 3:36.29 to finish as the meet's runner-up. The time goes down as the No. 9 time in school history outdoors and is the first time both Young and Hansen have appeared on the top 10 in the 4x400m relay.

Other victories for the Maroon and Gold over the weekend included Jake Kubiatowicz (discus - 55.95m), Yahya Madar (high jump - 2.08m) and Isaiah Schafer (shot put - 18.91m).
