The Maroon & Gold will be well-represented at the NCAA West Preliminary in Sacramento.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher track & field program will be well-represented at the NCAA West Preliminary as the University of Minnesota has qualified 34 entries for the NCAA first round competition, which is scheduled for May 24-27, hosted by Sacramento State at Hornet Stadium, in Sacramento, Calif.
About the NCAA West Prelim
The four-day competition takes place at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State. Qualifying individuals and relays advance to the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas, held on June 7-10 at Mike A Myers Stadium and Soccer Field. Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective event earn a berth into the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. In addition, the best 24 relay times advance to the NCAA preliminaries. Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Rounds sites will qualify for the NCAA Championships. The action will be live streamed via ESPN on ESPN+.
Gophers at the NCAA West Prelim
Minnesota has 20 total entries on the women's side and 12 entries on the men's side. All four relays will be represented in Sacramento with the men's and women's 4x100m and 4x400m teams all qualifying. In total 17 different student-athletes (including alternates) are headed to the regional meet for the men and 11 on the women's side.
The Maroon and Gold will have three individuals in both the men's and women's 100m and the men's No. 1 ranked hammer throw group is sending three participants. Michael Buchanan, Devin Augustine, Kaleb Siekmeier, Jake Kubiatowicz, Carlon Hosten and Amira Young will all participate in multiple individual events. Augustine and Hosten could potentially participate in up to four events during the preliminary rounds of the NCAA Championships with both of them on the qualifying 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
Out of Minnesota's qualifiers six men qualified for their first NCAA West Regional while four women earned bids for the first time in their careers.
