Jones Makes U20 World Team, Gopher Track Finishes Strong in Ann Arbor

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota saw true freshman Aidan Jones make the USATF World Team at the under-20 level division, finishing fourth in a field with some of the best young talent in the country. On the track the Gophers posted seven victories in Ann Arbor at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational with three different events posting top 10 program marks and times.
Jones made Team USA's U20 men's team by finishing fourth overall in Richmond, Va., running to a time of 24:23.3 at an 8K distance. The top six qualified for Team USA's roster. Jones now qualifies for the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. The event, which is contested in March, will be held in the Park of Friendship, next to the Danube River in the heart of Belgrade.
Additionally Minnesota fielded a pair of runners in the women's U20 race and also had one student-athlete in the men's senior level 10K. Redshirt freshman Shane Griepentrog finished 19th among the senior level in an impressive time of 30:51.5. At the U20 women's level (6K) Charlotte Lange finished 17th in a time of 22:04.5, and Taylor Isabel was 23rd in a time of 22:43.5.
Minnesota's day in Michigan started with another stand-out performance from Shelby Frank in the weight throw. The reigning Big Ten champion was victorious with a mark of 23.06m (75-8), which is the No. 3 mark in the NCAA this season. Frank led the way against a tough Big Ten field, edged out teammate Annie Nabwe who was second with a mark of 21.61m (70-10 3/4) while Hadley Streit finished fourth with a personal best of 18.18m (59-7 3/4).
In her first 800m as a member of the Maroon and Gold, graduate Brooke Jaworski finished with the fourth-fastest time in school history at 2:06.34. Other notable victories for the Maroon and Gold included Diarra Sow in the triple jump (1st, 12.74m), Maja Maunsbach in the 60m hurdles (3rd, 8.27) and Janielle Josephs in the 400m (1st, 54.91) while Alliyah McNeil won both the high jump and the long jump (1.75m HJ, 5.73m LJ).
The Maroon and Gold capped off the day with a pair of performances that go down as the No. 10 marks in school history. True freshman Sofia Condon started it off with a vault of 4.00m (13-1 1/2) to finish third overall. The women's 4x400m relay team then concluded the meet with the 10th-fastest time in school history at 3:38.67. The team consisted of Jayla Campbell, Dyandra Gray, Brooke Jaworski and Janielle Josephs now have the No. 12 time in the country.
Minnesota's first indoor home meet of the season is on the horizon with the Jack Johnson Classic scheduled for Jan. 26-27. The Gophers will also host an alumni tailgate on January 27, which will run throughout the entirety of the meet on Saturday.
