The Golden Gophers sit in fifth after day one of the Big Ten Championships.

MINNEAPOLIS – For the first time since 2011 the Big Ten has a freshman champion in the weight throw with Annie Nabwe of the University of Minnesota claiming the crown on Friday night at the 2024 Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio.

Nabwe, whoĀ set an NCAA freshman record in her victory, launched her winning throw of 23.36m (76-7 3/4) at the Spire Institute. The throw came on theĀ redshirtĀ freshman's third throw and improved on her No. 4 national ranking in the eventĀ that will see her to the NCAA Indoor Championships next month in Boston.Ā NabweĀ is the first freshman to win the Big Ten weight throw title since Dani Bunch (Purdue) in 2011.Ā

The victory for Nabwe edged out teammate Shelby Frank who finished with the bronze with a mark of 22.08m (72-5 1/4). Joining Frank in team scoring for the Gophers in the field was Lexy Berger and Sofia CondonĀ in the pole vault. For Condon, a true freshman, she cleared a lifetime best 4.15m (13-7 1/4) and finished in seventh while Berger earned a sixth-place finish at the same height.Ā

Minnesota earned a sixth-place finish in the DMR to wrap up Friday's team scoring. The quartet of Dalayni Etienne, Sydney Kretlow, Erin Reidy andĀ Zoie DundonĀ combined for a time of 11:20.86 in the team's first meet competing in the event this season.Ā

Minnesota earned eight advancements on the track on Friday, with true freshman Victory GodahĀ earning a spot in two different finals.Ā Godah, a Nigerian native, clocked a season-best 7.35 in the 60m to earn the spot in the final and then stopped the clock in a lifetime best 23.96 in the 200m to snag a spot in the championship race on Saturday.Ā Godah'sĀ appearances in the Big Ten final come in her first career indoor season in the United States.Ā GodahĀ will be joined in the 60m final by Odell Frye who earned the spot with a time of 7.40 in the prelims.Ā

The Maroon and Gold's sprint squad was busy withĀ Janielle Josephs also making the 400m final, a conference final that she has now qualified for in eight different meets between indoor and outdoor seasons in her career. Josephs' time of 53.53 will put her in the final to start Minnesota's day on the track on Saturday, at 12:40 p.m.

Another consistent performer was one Maja Maunsbach in the 60m hurdles. The Swedish national matched her lifetime best 8.18 in the preliminary round and will look for a medal opportunity on Saturday with Zariyah Black who put down a season best 8.39.Ā

In the 600m it was former Big Ten Champion, Abigail Schaaffe, making another conference final with the No. 5 time in the prelims. Schaafee's 1:29.84 puts the Jamaican in her fourth-straight 600m Big Ten final.Ā

Up at the 800m distance was Erin Reidy andĀ Zoie Dundon, who helped Minnesota go two-for-two with their entries in the event.Ā Dundon, aĀ redshirtĀ freshman, put down a lifetime best 2:06.70 while Reidy's 2:06.00 earned her a trip to her third 800m Big Ten final.Ā
