Records Fall for Third Straight Day of Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS – Freshman Davide Harabagiu swam his way to a school record on Friday night, marking the third day in a row that a member of the Gophers accomplished the feat.
Harabagiu opened up the day for the Gophers by breaking his own school record in the 100 fly prelims with a time of 45.35 to advance to the A final. In his night swim, Harabagiu touched the wall in 45.19, re-breaking his own record and placing fourth overall. The Rome, Italy native now owns the top three times in Gophers history in the 100 fly as just a freshman.
All five Gophers competing in the 100 fly prelims set new personal records. In addition to Harabagiu, senior Matt McDonald (46.14; B final) and freshman Ian Steffen (47.32; C final) advanced to the finals with new best times. Joe Rudd and Connor Groya also swam to new personal records with times of 47.69 and 48.08, respectively.
Senior William Christenson earned a podium finish with a personal-best time of 3:44.38 in the 400 IM, placing seventh overall. After swimming a PR to make it to the B final, Alberto Hernandez topped his previous best time to place 10th overall with a 3:45.28. Ryan Slonac cut his fastest time by 1.39 seconds in the C final of the 400 IM, coming in at 3:50.99.
It was a big night for 200 free swimmers, as all four Minnesota men advanced to the finals. After breaking the 200 free school record on Wednesday night, Bar Soloveychik led the pack with a fourth-place finish at 1:33.66. Grant Wodny (1:36.31), Lovro Serdarevic (1:36.54) and Tyler Hansen (1:37.10) all had personal bests in the event.
Joe Rudd represented the 'U' on the podium in the 100 breast after clocking in a new personal record of 53.78 to finish seventh. Kaiser Neverman finished 12th with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 52.98.
Harabagiu clocked a personal record in his second event of the day, the 100 back, after swimming a 46.49 to advance to the B final. Casey Stowe followed just behind, touching the wall in 46.69 to make the B final. Matt McDonald (46.99) and Ian Steffen (47.59) also secured new personal bests.
In the diving well, freshman YuTong Wang finished fifth in the 3-meter with a score of 416.15. Drew Bennett advanced to the B final and placed 15th with a score of 296.45.
In the final event of the day, the men's 200 free relay team of Harabagiu, Groya, Stowe and Serdarevic combined for a time of 1:17.86. The group placed seventh and picked up points for their podium finish.
Heading into the final day of competition, the Gophers sit in fifth place behind Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin.
Day four of the 2024 Big Ten Championships will include the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free, platform diving and the 400 free relay.
