Men's and Women's Track to Open Outdoor Season in Miami

The outdoor meet will feature many debuts on the men's side.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program is sending its men's and women's teams to the Miami Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla., to open the 2024 outdoor track and field campaign from March 15-16 at Cobb Stadium.
ABOUT THE MIAMI HURRICANE INVITATIONAL
Minnesota's first outdoor meet of the season will begin on Friday, March 15, at 10 a.m. with the men's hammer throw and the men's discus throw with the women to follow. The meet will have just two events on the track on Friday in the 300m and the 3000m with Saturday's competition starting at 10 a.m. in the field and 12 p.m. on the track. The meet will not be streamed, but can be followed via PTTiming.com with live results.

University of Minnesota senior Shelby Frank earned her fourth All-America honor one week ago in Boston, Mass., at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships in the women's weight throw, bringing home the NCAA silver medal for the second straight season.
Frank's silver medal earned the Grand Forks, N.D., native her second indoor All-America honor while redshirt freshman Anthonett Nabwe earned her first career All-American finish in the same event. Frank's mark of 22.69m (74-5 1/2) came on her fourth throw of the competition and propelled her from fifth to second through four rounds of throws. Her mark stood the rest of the way and brought home eight team points for the Maroon and Gold. Frank bested her seed placement of No. 3 entering the indoor championships, edging out Ole Miss' Jasmine Mitchell who finished third with a mark of 22.15m (72-8).
GOPHERS COLLECT POSTSEASON AWARDS
Redshirt freshman Anthonett Nabwe was named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Year, while Associate Head Coach Peter Miller was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year, the Big Ten and the USTFCCCA announced on Thursday. Miller coached Nabwe to the Big Ten title in the weight throw and followed that up with a Second Team All-America finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 7 in Boston, Mass. A 2023 OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD RECAP
Last season Minnesota finished second on the men's side at the Big Ten Championships and seventh on the women's side in Bloomington, Ind. The program sent 10 different event entries to the NCAA Outdoor Championships which included seven on the men's side and three on the women's. Minnesota sent both its men's and women's 4x100m relays to the national championships with the men's program finsihing 10th overall with the help of Augustine and Schirmer who are both back this season. The women's relay team loses Gopher great Amira Young, Akilah Lewis and Lauren Hansen.
MEN'S PROGRAM TO MAKE SEASON DEBUT
The 2023 outdoor campaign was a successful one for the Maroon and Gold with the Gophers finishing 20th in the country as a program and second as a team at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. The 2024 season will see the return of two 2023 outdoor All-Americans in Finn Schirmer and Devin Augustine. Still on the team, but taking a Olympic redshirt season, are All-Americans Kostas Zaltos and Michael Buchanan.
Additionally Minnesota is excited to welcome a number of potential young impact individuals in Angelos Mantzouranis (Athens, Greece), Charles Godfred (Ukana Mkpa Eyop, Nigeria), Shane Griepentrog (Valders, Wis.) among others.

Minnesota's outdoor season continues in Waco, Texas, at the Clyde Hart Classic on the campus of Baylor University. That meet will run from March 22-23.
