Minnesota had six top collegiate finishers.
MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Golden Gophers began their 2024 outdoor track and field campaign in Miami, Fla., at the Miami Hurricanes Invitational at Cobb Stadium. The 'U' had the top college finisher in six different events over the two-day meet.
Minnesota's short sprinters were outstanding all weekend long with Devin Augustine's 100m performance arguably being the best. The returning 4x100m relay All-American opened his outdoor season with a matchup with a number of professionals and came out third overall in a time of 10.16, a lifetime best for the Trinidad & Tobago native who is second all-time at the University of Minnesota. Augustine was joined on Saturday by Gary Afram's 10.34 and Charles Godfred's 10.41 which go down as the No. 5 and No. 9 100m times at the 'U'.
Godfred's weekend was not limited to his performance on the straightaway, but Godfred's long jump mark of 7.74m (25-4 3/4) helped him finish as the top college athlete and put him at No. 4 all-time at Minnesota with his leap being the longest since 2016 (Luca Wieland).
Another impressive Minnesota debut came from true freshman Angelos Mantzouranis in the hammer throw. The rookie from Athens, Greece won the event on his first throw that measured at 70.27m (230-6) which goes down as the No. 4 in program history. After a redshirt season in 2022-23, reigning Big Ten Indoor Freshman of the Year Anthonett Nabwe wasted no time with a discus throw of 55.76m (182-11) to finish second at the meet but catapulted her to No. 3 all-time at Minnesota.
Alliyah McNeil was a busy competitor in Miami with the long jumper reaching a distance of 6.17m (20-3) to win the event and pushed her to the No. 6 mark in program history in her outdoor debut with Minnesota. McNeil also finished second in the women's high jump with a clearance of 1.77m (5-9 3/4).
Christian Martin also made his Gopher debut on Saturday in the 110m hurdles. The reigning Ivy League hurdles champion began his Minnesota career with a time of 14.10 in a highly competitive field, which puts him at No. 4 in school history and just ahead of teammate Finn Schirmer's 14.11 from 2023.
The other notable top 10 program performances for the Gophers were Odell Frye in the 200m (No. 6, 23.83), Diarra Sow in the triple jump (No. 6, 12.88m | 42-3 1/4) and Brooke Moore in the triple jump (No. 7, 12.69m | 41-7 3/4).
Minnesota's outdoor season continues in Waco, Texas, at the Clyde Hart Classic on the campus of Baylor University. That meet will run from March 22-23.
