From Coach Strodel's Desk
"It's great to open the season at home," Minnesota head coach Alicea Strodel said. "We are able to enter multiple events, and some athletes will have opportunities to race multiple times. I'm excited for our first years to put on the uniform for the first time and race as a Gopher."
Last Time on the Water
The Gophers ended the 2025 Big Ten Conference Rowing Championships in seventh place from the Indianapolis Rowing Center in Indianapolis, Ind. The First Varsity Four crew turned in Minnesota's highest finish as it raced to fifth in the Grand Finals. The Maroon and Gold's Second Novice Eight/Fourth Varsity Eight built an open-water lead early in their race on the way to a Petite Finals victory, while the Third Varsity Four crew followed by winning the Petite Finals, leading from start to finish. The Gophers' Second Varsity Eight battled to finish sixth in the Grand Finals that vaulted the team score to help the team end the day seventh.
Returning B1G Honorees
A season ago, Manon Field was named to the All-Big Ten First Team, while Josefine Freltoft landed on the All-Big Ten Second Team and both award winners have returned to campus for the Maroon and Gold in 2025-26. Sophia Pirigyi earned the B1G Sportsmanship Award during the final ceremony at Eagle Creek Park at the B1G Championship and now begins her junior campaign at Minnesota.
Collecting a B1G Weekly Honor
For their efforts at last spring's Big 12/Big Ten Double Duel, the Gophers' First Varsity Four crew of Annika Maiorino (cox), Jaden Deutscher, Nuala Macfarlane, Sophia Pirigyi, and Emily Franke was recognized by the Big Ten Conference on April 15 as a B1G Boat of the Week. Minnesota turned in a commanding performance in Kansas City, Kan., delivering back-to-back statement wins. The boat opened the regatta Friday night with a resounding 29-second victory over San Diego and followed up Saturday morning with an even more decisive performance, cruising to a 34-second win over host Kansas.
Gophers' Captains Named for 2025-26
The Gophers announced their two captains for the 2025-26 season, including a returning leader and one new captain. Senior Manon Field (Hudson, Wis.) is back for her second year in the leadership group and is joined this year by junior Josefine Freltoft (Copenhagen, Denmark). The two veterans on the Minnesota roster will be critical to guide the program for the season.
