Minnesota Earns Multiple Medals, Podium Finishes on Day 3 of Men’s Big Tens

MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gopher men's swimming and diving program had a stellar third day of the men's Big Ten Championships, notching two medals, four podium finishes, and a new school record. Minnesota also clinched an NCAA 'A' cut and several 'B' cuts.

Additionally, on Friday evening, senior Tommy McCarthy was recognized as one of nine honorees of the 2025 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

In the diving well, two Gophers secured spots on the podium. YuTong Wang earned the silver medal in the 3 meter after his score of 424.75 landed him in second place, and Drew Bennett placed eighth after recording a 322.35.

The 400 medley relay squad took bronze in Friday's finals, setting a new Gopher record with a time of 3:04.55, simultaneously qualifying for the 'A' cut. Casey Stowe led off the group with a 46.38 in the first 100 yard split, followed by Joe Rudd with a time of 51.72. Jacob Johnson then recorded a time of 44.76 in his split before Kaiser Neverman anchored the team with a 41.69.

In the 100 fly, freshman Jacob Johnson placed fifth with a 'B' cut and personal-best time of 45.28. Davide Harabagiu placed 14th with his own 'B' cut time of 46.45. Ian Steffan took 23rd place with his time of 46.91.

Fifth-year Joey Tepper placed 14th in the 400 IM, hitting 'B' cut with his 3:46.51 time. Alberto Hernandez placed 16th in the finals, recording a time of 3:52.41, after his 3:47.42 seed time reached 'B' cut. Joe Polyak and Jack Ballard placed 21st and 23rd, respectively, with each claiming 'B' cuts. Polyak had a time of 3:48.40 in the finals, and Ballard finished in 3:49.09.

Both Bar Soloveychik and Daniel Eichel recorded 'B' cuts in the 200 free, placing 13th and 14th, respectively. Soloveychik finished with a time of 1:34.51, while Eichel notched 1:34.86.

Joe Rudd placed 10th in the 100 breast with a 'B' cut, PR time of 52.47. Max Scheurer finished 20th with a 53.61.

In the 100 back, Casey Stowe reached 12th place after a 'B' cut, personal-best of 46.34 in the finals. Ian Steffan also hit 'B' cut, with a PR time of 47.02. Matt McDonald's 47.16 in the event placed him 19th.

With 512.5, Minnesota moved up to fifth place overall heading into the fourth day of competition. Indiana leads with 1-67 points, followed by Michigan with 784.5, then Ohio State with 731. 

Saturday's schedule includes preliminaries and finals for the 200 free, 100 free, 200 breast, 400 free relay, and platform. The 1650 free will begin at 3:15 p.m. CT.
