Gophers Open the New Year Against Tampa and Notre Dame

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota men's and women's swimming programs hit the pool for the first time in 2026 this weekend, traveling to the Sunshine State to take on the University of Tampa and the University of Notre Dame at the Riseman Aquatics Center.

The Gophers closed out the 2025 Minnesota Invite in second place of final team scoring, with the women's team tallying a total team score of 1616.5 and the men's team tallying a total team score of 1341.5.
Jacob Johnson came away with the only swimming event win of the meet for the Gophers, tallying a 1:41.10 in the "A" final to take the Men's 200 fly. Drew Bennett swept the men's diving events, securing wins in the 1-meter, 3-meter, and platform for Minnesota. Elna Widerstrom walked away with wins in the 1-meter and 3-meter events on the women's side.
Three Gopher swimmers reached NCAA qualifying marks throughout the three day event, with Morgan Thomas qualifying in the 50 free, Johnson qualifying in the 100 and 200 fly, and Katie McCarthy qualifying in the 1650 free.
CSCAA Rankings
Minnesota women's swim and dive hit the final CSCAA rankings of 2025 at No. 23 in the nation. The first set of rankings for the new year are currently set to release on January 23.

Gopher divers will make their 2026 debut next weekend in Boca Raton, taking on Florida Atlantic University and the University of North Texas. Action against the Owls and the Mean Green is currently set to begin at 9 AM (CT).
