Seven Gophers Compete for Big Ten Singles Title

Seven Minnesota men's tennis players will compete for the Big Ten Singles Championship this weekend in East Lansing, Mich.

It is the final fall tournament of the season for the Gophers, whose last Big Ten champion was Chris Wettengel in 2003. Sebastian Gallego reached the finals of last year's event, but will not compete this weekend. The event will consist of a 64-player main draw that begins on Fri., Oct. 30 with the championship match set for Mon., Nov. 2. A second draw will also be conducted as well as a doubles competition.

The Gophers will be represented by Phillip Arndt, Julian Dehn, Jonathan Hadash, Derek Peterson, Brendan Ruddock, Michael Sicora and Eddie Svenda at this weekend's tournament. Gallego, Dino Bilankov and Tobias Wernet, who participated in last weekend's ITA Central Regional, will not play at the Big Ten tournament.

Of those competing this weekend, Svenda leads the team with a 6-2 record, including the individual title in the "C" Flight at the Drake Invitational earlier this fall. Hadash brings a 5-4 record into the weekend.
