Gallego Leads Gophers at Pepperdine Invite

Sebastian Gallego won all three of his singles matches to lead the Minnesota men's tennis team at the Pepperdine Invitational over the weekend in Malibu, Calif.

The Gophers had nine players competing in the event and played singles and doubles matches against Pepperdine, Fresno State and Arizona. No team results were kept for the meet. Gallego went 3-0 in his matches, while Dino Bilankov, Tobias Wernet and Michael Sicora were all 2-1 and Brendan Ruddock was 2-0.

Gallego opened with a win over Jenson Turner of Pepperdine 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 before beating Rikus de Villiers of Fresno State 6-2, 6-4 and Jason Zafiros of Arizona 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Bilankov lost his first match against Pepperdine, but bounced back for a 6-3, 7-5 win over Remi Boutillier of Fresno State and a 6-4, 6-2 win over Geoff Embry of Arizona. Wernet also lost against Pepperdine, but posted wins over Mirko Zapletal of Fresno State 6-2, 6-4 and Pat Metham of Arizona 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. Sicora beat Alejandro Moreno of Pepperdine 6-4, 6-2, but lost a three-set match against Fresno State before finishing with a win over Andres Carrasco of Arizona 6-0, 7-5.

Ruddock beat Stuart Keplar of Pepperdine 6-3, 6-3 and Sebastian Hafner of Fresno State 7-5, 5-7, 7-6. Phillip Arndt and Julian Dehn each had wins over Arizona as Arndt defeated Alex Johnson 6-2, 6-2 and Dehn downed Frank Chen 6-0, 6-3. Eddie Svenda added a win over Hugo Verdi Fortin of Fresno State 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles, Minnesota had two wins over Arizona as Dehn and Bilnkov beat Johnson and Ravid Hazi 8-4 and Jonathan Hadash and Sicora defeated Carrasco and Chen 8-5. Ruddock and Arndt collected the Gophers' only other doubles win with an 8-4 victory over Siddharth Alapati and Verdi Fortin of Fresno State.
