Minnesota Earns Two 6-1 Victories

MINNEAPOLIS - The 46th-ranked Minnesota men's tennis team improved its record to 5-1 Friday with a pair of 6-1 victories against Green Bay and 51st-ranked Dartmouth at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers have now won five of their first six matches for the first time since 2011.

As was the case in its first four matches, Minnesota emerged with doubles competition wins in both of its matches. The Gophers are now 6-0 in doubles competitions with a cumulative individual record of 12-1.

Against the Phoenix, Matic Spec and Eric Frueh won at No. 2 and Ruben Weber and Jack Hamburg were victorious at No. 3. Spec and Frueh improved to 3-0 on the spring and 6-2 overall with a win at No. 3 against Dartmouth. No. 58-ranked Leandro Toledo and Felix Corwin cruised to a 6-2 triumph at No. 2 to up their 2015 record to 3-0. They are now 6-1 overall as a tandem.

In singles, Spec gave his team a 2-0 lead in both matches with decisive, straight-set wins at No. 5. Weber and Jeremy Lynn clinched the team win against Green Bay with singles victories, while Hamburg and Corwin secured the second match.

No. 17-ranked Toledo padded the Maroon and Gold's advantage in both matches by taking down two ranked opponents in No. 77 Michael Tenzer of Green Bay and No. 65 Dovydas Sakinis of the Big Green. He now has 19-career singles wins versus ranked foes, including four as a senior.

No. 107 Spec and No. 117 Corwin continued the strong start for the Minnesota freshman class in singles Friday. The two rookies have combined to go 29-5 overall and 9-1 in dual-match play.

The Gophers wrap up their weekend Sunday with a noon match at the Baseline Tennis Center against No. 24 Oklahoma State. Minnesota will look to avenge a 4-1 season-opening loss against the Cowboys in Stillwater, Okla. last season.
