Gophers Lead at B1G Triple Duals

The University of Minnesota men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened competition against the Northwestern Wildcats and Purdue Boilermakers Friday night in Evanston, Illinois. The Golden Gophers currently lead both B1G teams. Season best times, some personal records and a pool record led the Gophers to 12 event wins, including every relay and diving event.
WOMEN -
Minnesota at Northwestern, 127-59
Minnesota vs. Purdue, 109-77
Zoe Avestruz, Rachel Munson, Danielle Nack and Lauren Votava started the meet off with a first place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.64. Minnesota also picked up third in the event.
Minnesota collected first in the 400 free relay with a pool record of 3:20.23 from Votava, Avestruz, Nack and Abigail Raatz.
Yu Zhou earned top marks in the women's 3-meter diving event with a score of 370.40. Lexi Tenenbaum finished third, followed by Jessica Ramberg for fourth.
Senior Samantha Harding won the 1000 free with a season best of 9:48.97. Breanne Siwicki placed third (9:58.32).
Sophomore Nack won the 200 fly with a 1:59.21.
Brooke Zeiger won the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.08. Freshman Dani Bergeson followed for second place with a time of 2:04.52. Each had a season best race.
Votava finished second in the 200 free with a season best time of 1:47.21.
Rookie Munson led the Gophers to a second place mark in the 100 breast with season best time of 1:01.96.
Freshman Avestruz picked up second in the 100 back with a 55.41.
Raatz led the Gophers to a second place finish in the 50 free with a season best of 23.49.
MEN -
Minnesota at Northwestern, 121-64
Minnesota vs. Purdue, 117-69
Gophers Daryl Turner, Conner McHugh, Paul Fair and Bowe Becker won the 200 medley relay with a 1:28.40.
Turner, Fair, Becker and Noah Busch earned a convincing win in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:57.42.
Senior Manny Pollard posted a personal record to win the 1-meter diving competition with 388.55 points. Fellow senior Dylan Zoe placed third, while Matt Barnard placed fourth.
Turner went on to win the 100 back with a speedy season best of 47.31.
Rookie Becker posted a 20.22 in the 50 free for first place. The time was the fastest for the Gophers this season.
McHugh led the 100 breast field with 55.61, and was followed by teammate Eric Sande (56.33). Nick Hatanaka and John Bushman finished fourth and fifth respectively, allowing Minnesota to dominate the top five.
Fair led Minnesota to a 2-3-4 finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.68. Teammates Jakub Maly and Erick Huft earned third and fourth respectively.
Michael Messner finished second in the 1000 free with a 9:22.06. Messner picked up fourth in the 200 fly behind junior Nick Orf, who posted a 1:51.41 for third place.
Freshman Brian Poon placed second in the 200 IM with a 1:50.71.
DAY 2 ACTION
Competition will resume tomorrow at the Norris Aquatics Center at 12:00 p.m. CT. Events will include: 400 IM, 100 free, 200 back, 100 fly, 500 free, 200 breast, 400 medley relay, 200 free relay, men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter.
