Gophers Start Season 2-0

Minneapolis, Minn. ââ'¬" The University of Minnesota started off their spring season by going 2-0 Friday after defeating South Dakota State 7-0 and Marquette 7-0 at Baseline Tennis Center.
Marino Alpeza and Eli Ogilvy started off the Gophers spring dual season by defeating Lucas Pereira and Chuck Tang 6-1. Soon after Justyn Levin and Stefan Milicevic clinched the first point for Minnesota with a 6-1 victory over Elliot Ward and Marco Paulo Castro.
The No. 48 doubles pair in the nation, Felix Corwin and Matic Spec, were leading Jonny Higham and Emerson Styles 5-2 before they stopped the match once the doubles point was clinched.
Freshman George Lovitt picked up the first singles victory by defeating Pereira 6-0, 6-1. It was also his first collegiate singles dual match victory. Fellow freshman Ogilvy soon followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Gabriel Santos.
Spec, No. 42 nationally, defeated Style 6-4, 6-0 while Corwin picked up the winning point by defeating Castro 6-3, 6-1. Jesse Sprinkel picked up his first victory of the spring by beating Tang 7-5, 6-1. Josip Krstanovic closed the match for the Maroon and Gold by defeating Higham 6-3, 6-4.
Minnesota stayed hot starting off the second match versus Marquette with a 6-2 doubles victory from Spec and Corwin over Nick Dykema and Mackenzie Stearns. Ogilvy and Alpeza clinched the doubles point when they defeated Luke Smrek and Alvaro Verdu 6-2.
Levin and Milicevic were leading Greg Anderson and Kristivan Trukov 5-3 before the matched was stopped after the point was clinched.
The winning ways carried over to the singles matches with Ogilvy defeating Dykema 6-0, 6-4 to put Minnesota up 2-0. Next Spec defeated Verdu 6-2, 6-1 to make it 3-0 Gophers.
Milicevic won his first singles dual match by defeating Anderson 6-2, 6-2 and clinched the victory for the Maroon and Gold in the process. Corwin added to the Minnesota lead by taking down Smrek 6-3, 6-3.
Lovitt picked up his second singles win of the day by defeating Mackenzie Stearns. Alpeza battled back to win his match versus Trukov 7-6 (5), 6-2 to close out the successful night for Minnesota.
