Gophers Handed Their First Loss

Raleigh, N.C. - The University of Minnesota men's tennis team was handed their first loss of the season Saturday, falling 5-2 to North Carolina State.
Doubles
The No. 2 doubles duo of Marino Alpeza and Justyn Levin were the first to finish as they fell to Nick Horton and Alexis Galarneau 6-2. No. 22 Matic Spec and Felix Corwin picked up a victory when they defeated Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles. Corwin and Spec extended their doubles winning streak to nine matches.
Stefan Milicevic and Eli Ogilvy picked up the doubles clincher as the No. 3 doubles pair. They defeated Georgiy Malyshev and Michael Ogden 6-4 to put the Gophers up 1-0.
Singles
No. 51 Spec took on No. 67 Alexis Galarneau in the No. 1 singles spot. Galarneau defeated spec in two sets 6-2, 6-2. The Wolfpack were quickly 2-1 after Alpeza fell 7-6(7), 6-4 to Ogden in the No. 4 singles.
The third singles match to finish was from the No. 2 spot where Corwin fell to No. 68 Horton. Corwin won the first set 6-4 but dropped the next two sets 6-3, 6-1.
North Carolina State extended their lead to 4-1 when No. 113 Milicevic was defeated 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 by Igor Saveljic in the No. 3 singles.
Josip Krstanovic ended up falling to Malyshev 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(8) in the No. 5 spot then George Lovitt finished off the day with a Minnesota victory. He defeated Sean Burnette 7-6(2), 6-3 from the No. 6 singles spot.
The Gophers will return to Baseline Tennis Center for a five-match homestand beginning on February 17 as they host Middle Tennessee State at 6 p.m.
