Final Draws
Minnesota closed out the Gopher Invitational with some hardware. Justyn Levin and Eli Ogilvy took the Maroon Team Draw Championship, with Levin going a perfect 8-0 combined in doubles and singles this weekend. Levin and Ogilvy defeated Spaanjard and Tuff of DePaul in the finals, but Ogilvy fell to Spaanjaard in singles. With the championship on the line, Levin held clutch with a 6-5, 7-6 (2) win over Tuff to clinch the title.
Overall, Minnesota went a pristine 4-0 in doubles and 5-3 in singles.
Doubles
Minnesota started off the day hot in the doubles competition, going a perfect 4-0. Kaleb Dobbs and Vlad Lobak earned a 6-3 win over Morris and Krulig of Denver, followed by a 7-6 (2) win for Levin and Ogilvy over Spaanjard and Tuff of DePaul. Then, Jackson Allen and Marino Alpeza defeated Clark and MacGeoch of Drake 6-4, while Sebastian Vile and Josip Krstanovic defeated Ross and Martin of Dartmouth 7-5. With that win, Vile and Krstanovic broke their doubles drought, winning their first doubles match of the weekend.
Singles
The Gophers finished with a 5-3 record in singles play on Day 3. Dobbs fell 6-2, 6-1 to Morris of Denver, while Lobak fell to Krulig of Denver in a gutsy 10-point third-set tiebreak with a final score of 1-6, 6-4, 14-12. Ogilvy also lost in singles, losing 6-4, 6-2 to Spaanjard of DePaul. Levin then grinded out a 6-5, 7-6 (2) win over Tuff of DePaul, clinching the Maroon team Draw Championship for him and Ogilvy.
After Levins clinched victory, Vile fell 6-2, 6-4, to Ross of Dartmouth, while Krstanovic defeated Martin of Dartmouth 7-6, 6-3. Then, Allen fleeced Clark of Drake 6-2, 6-1, while Lobak closed down the tournament with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 win over MacGeoch of Drake
The Spin/What's Next
Senior Justyn Levin obviously impressed in the final Gopher Invitational of his career, but Minnesota also saw strong play from other parts of the lineup. Freshman Sebastian Vile lost a couple close matches, but showed grit and determination to continue his strong play, earning a singles win in his first ever Gopher Invitational. Vile and senior doubles partner Josip Krstanovic also had some great moments playing off their different skill sets, despite lack of experience playing together,
Sophomore Jackson Allen and senior Marino Alpeza proved to be a tough doubles pairing, winning three of their four doubles matches through the tournament, including a tough 6-2 win over Notre Dame on Saturday, and advancing to the semifinals of the Gold Team Draw together.
Minnesota closed out their Fall Season with the Gopher Invitational, and will be back on the court against DePaul and Green Bay at home on Jan. 19, 2019, for the opener of their Spring season.
