The University of Minnesota men's tennis team was downed by the Oregon Ducks by a score of 1-4 to conclude the first day of competition at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Gophers' squad fell short in the day one doubles draws despite the star pairing of Josip Krstanovic / Justyn Levin walking away with an early victory against the No. 38 seeded Roberts/Soemarno by a score of 6-2. The Ducks would later on clinch the doubles points with victories against the pairings of Jackson Allen / Eli Ogilvy and Marino Alpeza / Stefan Milicevic both by scores of 7-5.
In singles action, the Gophers managed to secure one victory from Alpeza over Oregon's Riki Oshima with a score of 7-5, 6-2. The Golden Gophers would fall in the following three matches to finish the day with a team score of 1-4.
"Today was a good test to start the season. Oregon was resilient in doubles and was able to secure that point" head coach Geoff Young said. "In singles they were better than us today, but I believe we will learn from today and be better for tomorrow's match against Central Florida."
After their Saturday loss, the Gophers will take on Central Florida in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 at 1 p.m. (CT).
