Gophers Earn Three Ranked Singles Wins in 4-3 Win Over UCF

PALO, ALTO, CALIF. - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis program came from behind to defeat the University of Central Florida Sunday, winning 4-3. Sophomore Vlad Lobak provided the clinching point for the Gophers, defeating Bogdan Pavel 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, while the team earned three ranked wins in singles play.
"It was fun to watch our guys this weekend," head coach Geoff Young said. "Very happy that they can be rewarded with a win to travel home with. UCF is a strong team that I'm sure will have a good year."
DOUBLES
Minnesota fought hard in the doubles portion of the competition, with Jackson Allen and Eli Ogilvy winning No. 2 doubles 6-4. Them Josip Krstanovic and Justyn Levin fell in No. 1 doubles 7-5, before UCF earned the doubles point with Marino Alpeza and Stefan Milicevic falling 6-3 in No. 3 doubles.
SINGLES
Krstanovic gave Minnesota a strong start in No. 1 singles, earning a ranked win over No. 31 Gabriel Descamps, winning 6-3, 6-4. Sebastian Vile then fell 6-2, 6-4 to No. 88 Mikhail Sokolovskiy before Milicevic took down No. 57 Juan Pablo Grassi Muzzuchi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Alpeza then fell to No. 79 Alan Rubio in a tough three-set match, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 before Allen tied up the dual with a ranked win of his own, defeating No. 107 Trey Hilderbrand 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Lobak then closed the door for Minnesota, defeating Pavel in three sets.
THE SPIN
Minnesota won three ranked matches against UCF, and bounced back after a tough match against Oregon. Even after dropping the doubles point, the Gophers were able to come back and grind out a win with their work in singles. These two early tests in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend should be quality preparation for future Big Ten play.
UP NEXT
Minnesota will stay on the road next weekend, heading down south to face Alabama and Auburn on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
